Excerpt from La Religion de la Grece Antique Depuis les trois volumes d'Alfred Maury publies de 1857 a 1859, nous n'avions pas en francais, sauf un chapitre du recent manuel de Chantepie de la Saussaye, d'ouvrage d'ensemble sur l'histoire de la Religion de l'ancienne Grece. On a tente de combler cette lacune par un ouvrage de format et de pretentions tres modestes, ou bien des questions sont inevitablement omises ou simplifiees. Ce n'est pas proprement un travail d'erudition, et les jugements emis par l'auteur sont loin d'etre toujours le resultat de recherches originales. Puisqu'il s'agissait d'une etude de vulgarisation, il a cru pouvoir se rassurer en les appuyant, aussi souvent que possible, sur les travaux des specialistes. Au moins s'est-il impose, dans la mesure de ses moyens, de verifier leurs conclusions par l'etude des textes et des monuments, sans se dissimuler qu'il ne connait cependant qu'une petite partie de l'immense litterature du sujet, sans oublier la part d'hypothese que comportent souvent les vues des historiens. Dans un ouvrage d'erudition, pour etudier les lointaines origines de la Religion des peuples grecs, il aurait fallu suivre le plan historico-geographique d'Otto Gruppe. L'analyse des divers cultes et des differents mythes propres a chaque cite aurait ete suivie de la discussion des hypotheses les plus vraisemblables susceptibles d'eclairer leurs origines.
