Les croyances et les pratiques shi'ites restent encore peu connues. D'abord, parce que les etudes scientifiques du shi'isme, dans leur grande majorite, sont tres recentes. Il y a ensuite les aleas de l'Histoire - et les rivalites ideologiques qui en resultent - dont une des consequences majeures a ete, a l'interieur meme du shi'isme, l'ostracisme applique aux pensees deviantes et la censure des textes juges problematiques. Enfin, la religion shi'ite elle-meme, se definissant dans ses sources de base comme une doctrine fondamentalement esoterique et initiatique, ne se revele pas toujours facilement. Rien de plus normal dans ces conditions qu'une partie de l'enseignement religieux, sans doute celle jugee la plus essentielle, soit protegee par les regles qui regissent tout esoterisme. Ces multiples raisons, extrinseques aussi bien qu'intrinseques au shi'isme, font de celui-ci une religion discrete et meconnue. Le present ouvrage examine quelques aspects peu explores de l'histoire et de la spiritualite shi'ite dans toute leur complexite. This study of messianism and revolution examines an extremely rich though unexplored historical record on the rise of Islam and its sociopolitical revolutions from Muhammad’s constitutive revolution in Arabia to the Abbasid revolution in the East and the Fatimid and Almohad revolutions in North Africa and the Maghreb. Bringing the revolutions together in a comprehensive framework, Saïd Amir Arjomand uses sociological theory as well as the critical tools of modern historiography to argue that a volatile but recurring combination of apocalyptic motivation and revolutionary action was a driving force of historical change time and again. A revolution is a discontinuity: one political order replaces another, typically through whatever violent means are available. Modern theories of revolutions tend neatly to bracket the French Revolution of 1789 with the fall of the Soviet Union two hundred years later, but contemporary global uprisings—with their truly multivalent causes and consequences—can overwhelm our ability to make sense of them. In this authoritative new book, Saïd Amir Arjomand reaches back to antiquity to propose a unified theory of revolution. Revolution illuminates the stories of premodern rebellions from the ancient world, as well as medieval European revolts and more recent events, up to the Arab Spring of 2011. Arjomand categorizes revolutions in two groups: ones that expand the existing body politic and power structure, and ones that aim to erode—but paradoxically augment—their authority. The revolutions of the past, he tells us, can shed light on the causes of those of the present and future: as long as centralized states remain powerful, there will be room for greater, and perhaps forceful, integration of the politically disenfranchised.

The Global Repositioning of Japanese Religions: An Integrated Approach explores how Japanese religions respond to the relativizing effects of globalization, thereby repositioning themselves as global players. Organized around concrete case studies focusing on the engagement of Japanese Buddhism, Shinto, and several new religious movements in areas such as ecology, inter-religious dialogue, and politics, this book shows that the globalization of Japanese religions cannot be explained simply in terms of worldwide institutional expansion. Rather, it is a complex phenomenon conditioned by a set of pervasive factors: changes in consciousness, the perception of affinities and resonances at the systemic and cultural levels, processes of decontextualization, and a wide range of power issues including the re-enactment of cultural chauvinism.
