Herederos de ese optimismo, ¿podríamos todavía sostener que enterrar a Dios nos condujo a un mundo mejor? El egoísmo, el individualismo, la indiferencia, la falta de solidaridad, el relativismo moral, la irracionalidad y la violencia que hoy prevalecen por doquier confirman lo contrario. A partir de la exposición del proceso de secularización que se dio con la llegada de la filosofía moderna, y de las trágicas consecuencias que produjo la instauración de la razón instrumental, el autor propone en este libro recuperar la dimensión religiosa presente en el ser humano -que brota de su misma esencia- y la experiencia de fe en Dios -siguiendo el programa del cristianismo- como una alternativa para instaurar un orden social verdaderamente humano, en el que, como añoraba el filósofo Max Horkheimer, "lo injusto no sea la última palabra".

The Religion of Life examines the interconnections and relationship between Catholicism and eugenics in early twentieth-century Chile. Specifically, it demonstrates that the popularity of eugenic science was not diminished by the influence of Catholicism there. In fact, both eugenics and Catholicism worked together to construct the concept of a unique Chilean race, la raza chilena. A major factor that facilitated this conceptual overlap was a generalized belief among historical actors that male and female gender roles were biologically determined and therefore essential to a functioning society. As the first English-language study of eugenics in Chile, The Religion of Life surveys a wide variety of different materials (periodicals, newspapers, medical theses, and monographs) produced by Catholic and secular intellectuals from the first half of the twentieth century. What emerges from this examination is not only a more complex rendering of the relationship between religion and science but also the development of White supremacist logics in a Latin American context.

This book offers an in-depth analysis of a fundamental human freedom and a cornerstone of democracy: the Freedom of Religions or Beliefs (FoRB). The book focuses on the legal protection and promotion of FoRB in Europe because, in this context, exercising this right goes beyond a mere internal positioning in terms of legislation; rather, it is influenced by international and supranational case law, as well as the promotional activities of selected non-state subjects of international law. The content is divided into three sections: Part I on the European Convention of Human Rights, Part II on the EU, and Part III on other international actors. The first two Parts examine FoRB in its systematic aspects and “day-to-day” aspects. In contrast, the third Part highlights the promotional activities carried out by the Holy See, the ILO, the Council of Europe (“beyond the Strasbourg Court”), and the OSCE to promote, recommend or otherwise support it. Overall, the volume highlights how the exercise of FoRB can be ensured via international and supranational legal protection (both normative and judicial) and via promotional activities aimed at encouraging and helping states guarantee tolerance and pluralism in their national legislation.
