Il Fedro (in greco antico: Φαῖδρος, Phâidros), scritto da Platone probabilmente nel 370 a.C., è un dialogo tra due personaggi, Socrate e Fedro. Il dialogo è composto da tre discorsi sul tema dell’amore che servono come metafora per la discussione del corretto uso della retorica. Esse comprendono discussioni sull’anima, la follia, l’ispirazione divina e l’arte. Il dialogo riguarda l’uso e il valore della retorica in connessione con l’educazione e la filosofia: sullo sfondo, a fornire il fondamentale inquadramento concettuale, permane il sistema delle idee e il metodo corretto per pervenire alla conoscenza della verità e per comunicarla. Fedro, un giovane ateniese appassionato dell’arte del discorso, incontra Socrate e con lui inizia a discorrere di retorica, mentre i due si recano fuori di Atene, nella valle dell’Ilisso, a est della città. Il luogo offre a Platone lo spunto per produrre una delle descrizioni ambientali più belle di tutta la letteratura greca. In questo scenario di grande tranquillità e bellezza, Fedro racconta a Socrate di aver appena ascoltato un discorso, di cui ha la copia con sé, che l’oratore Lisia ha composto sull’amore, in particolare sull’opportunità di concedere i propri favori a chi non è innamorato, piuttosto che a chi lo sia. Socrate ascolta il discorso lisiano che Fedro legge e lo trova apprezzabile dal punto di vista della tecnica oratoria, ma scorretto nei presupposti metodologici e la tecnica perde di valore se non è sorretta dalla saggezza del pensiero.

This book presents a comprehensive study into Plato's theological doctrines, offering an important re-valuation of the status of Plato's gods and the relation between metaphysics and theology according to Plato. Starting from an examination of Plato's views of religion and the relation between religion and morality, Gerd Van Riel investigates Plato's innovative ways of speaking about the gods. This theology displays a number of diverging tendencies - viewing the gods as perfect moral actors, as cosmological principles or as celestial bodies whilst remaining true to traditional anthropomorphic representations. Plato's views are shown to be unified by the emphasis on the goodness of the gods in both their cosmological and their moral functions. Van Riel shows that recent interpretations of Plato's theology are thoroughly metaphysical, starting from aristotelian patterns. A new reading of the basic texts leads to the conclusion that in Plato the gods aren't metaphysical principles but souls who transmit the metaphysical order to sensible reality. The metaphysical principles play the role of a fated order to which the gods have to comply. This book will be invaluable to readers interested in philosophical theology and intellectual history.
