"This book examines how a group of transnational British-Italian women affiliated with the exiled patriots of the Italian Left repurposed traditionally feminine activities, such as fundraising, gift-giving, maternity, and memory collection, to make a substantial contribution to Italian Unification and state-building. Through their actions, Mary Chambers, Sara Nathan, Giorgina Saffi, Julia Salis Schwabe, and Jessie White Mario transcended the boundaries of acceptable behavior for middle-class women and participated in the broader female emancipation movement. By drawing attention to their activities, this book reveals how nineteenth-century female activists achieved their most revolutionary goals by using conservative, domestic, or anti-Catholic language. Adding to the growing understanding of the Italian Risorgimento as a transnational phenomenon, it also shows how non-Catholic and non-Italian women participated in the creation and development of the Italian state. Finally, the book argues for the continuing importance of religion in both politics and philanthropy throughout the nineteenth century."

This book investigates one of the major issues that runs through the history of Italian Judaism in the aftermath of emancipation: the correlation between integration, seen as the acquisition of citizenship and culture without renouncing Jewish identity, and assimilation, intended as an open refusal of Judaism of any participation in the community. On account of that correlation, identity has become one of the crucial problems in the history of the Italian Jewish community. This volume aims to discuss the setting of construction and formation--the family-- and focuses on women's experiences, specifically. Indeed, women were called through emancipation to ensure the continuity of Jewish religious and cultural heritage. It speaks to the growing interest for Women's and Gender Studies in Italy, and for the research on women's organizations which testify to the strong presence of Jewish women in the emancipation movement. These women formed a sisterhood that fought to obtain rights that were until then only accorded to men, and they were deeply socially engaged in such a way that was crucial to the overall process of the integration of Jews into Italian society.

Attraverso un excursus storico-comparativo, si propone di evidenziare come la Costituzione Italiana del 1948, nel suo testo originario e originale, costituisca una coerente espressione della storia costituzionale europea dai suoi albori, risalenti alla Rivoluzione francese, fino ai giorni nostri, come le Costituzioni spagnola e portoghese, approvate dopo la caduta del franchismo e del salazarismo, per altro non prese in considerazione, palesemente ispirate a quella dimostrano. Il testo vuole evidenziare, inoltre, come tutte le modificazioni approvate, proposte o respinte negli ultimi lustri non abbiano fatto altro, da un lato, che ridurre un testo coerente ad un centone normativo e, dall’altro, come tali iniziative si pongano completamente al di fuori dell’evoluzione storica non solo ma costituiscano un vero e proprio regresso. Si è trascurato il contesto storico, che per altro traspare, perché l’insufficienza di una visione tradizionalmente individualistico-borghese è appalesata dalla Costituzione consuetudinaria dell’U.K. e dalla Costituzione degli U.S.A.

Per capire il ruolo che storicamente il mazzinianesimo ha esercitato nel panorama politico-ideale dell’Italia liberale, in rapporto alla domanda femminile di cittadinanza, basterebbe forse il giudizio espresso da Annamaria Mozzoni nello scritto del 1864 La donna e i suoi rapporti sociali: «Non posso finire senza rendere omaggio alla scuola sociale del Mazzini, che informata ai principi di una morale giovane e purissima, tende a redimere la crescente generazione dal machiavellismo, e ferma ai principi accoglie la donna, e non accetta al suo diritto limitazione alcuna». Un giudizio che trova larga conferma nell’ispirazione sostanzialmente mazziniana della principale iniziativa “emancipazionista” italiana del XIX secolo, cioè il periodico «La donna» di Gualberta A. Beccari, che per anni riportò in testata il famoso passo dei Doveri che così recita: «Cancellate dalla vostra mente ogni idea di superiorità: non ne avete alcuna», e ancor più esplicitamente: «Abbiatela eguale nella vostra vita civile e politica». Ancora nel 1890 Emilia Mariani apriva la sua conferenza all’Esposizione Beatrice con un evidente omaggio a Mazzini. In effetti, all’interno del primo femminismo italiano il nucleo delle esponenti più direttamente influenzate dal mazzinianesimo svolse un ruolo cruciale fino agli anni Ottanta del XIX secolo, spingendosi spesso a rielaborare gli insegnamenti del maestro in modo da ampliarne la valenza emancipativa in rapporto alle nuove problematiche del tempo e, non di rado, anche oltre ciò che all’interno delle stesse file mazziniane era inteso. Il volume si offre come uno strumento di conoscenza e di approfondimento intorno alla questione, coniugando l’approccio critico di un ampio saggio introduttivo a una scelta antologica a corredo, in cui ogni testo è presentato in relazione al contesto, agli attori e al dibattito cui è connesso e analizzato alla luce degli aggiornamenti storiografici specifici.
