Habiendo pasado cinco años cautivo en un castillo francés, Fernando VII regresó a España en 1814. Tras abolir la Constitución, disolver las Cortes y dar por nulo todo lo obrado por ellas, el monarca despachó una poderosa expedición a América con el objeto de poner punto final a los procesos revolucionarios del continente. Al mando de Pablo Morillo, el llamado Ejército Pacificador sitió exitosamente a Cartagena a finales de 1815 y aniquiló posteriormente en un suspiro la revolución en la totalidad del Nuevo Reino. A pesar de que el rápido desplome de las Provincias Unidas auguraba un restablecimiento apacible y duradero de la autoridad monárquica, el régimen se derrumbó a su vez al cabo de tres años. ¿Cómo explicar semejante desenlace? ¿Cómo pudo la monarquía española abismar un prestigio secular en tan corto tiempo y cómo pudo el expediente republicano ser saludado de nuevo como el destino histórico de la Nueva Granada tras la dura experiencia del interregno? Dicho sucintamente, ¿por qué fracasó una pacificación comenzada bajo los más felices auspicios? Dejando de lado el relato tradicional que opone víctimas criollas a realistas despiadados, este libro propone una redefinición del período y sugiere estudiarlo como una restauración del período de las Restauraciones. Así mismo, y en lugar de concentrarse en el terror y en la “Reconquista”, se interesa por los experimentos exitosos de pacificación, por las estrategias de supervivencia de los revolucionarios y por la impronta de la experiencia fernandina en la fábrica de la República de Colombia.
