Comment les intellectuels québécois s'inscrivent-ils dans le monde social et politique de leur époque ? En fondant des revues ! A l'aide des textes de présentation (éditoriaux, prospectus) des premiers numéros de quelque six cents revues parues au Québec entre 1778 et 2004, Andrée Fortin propose une lecture synchronique et diachronique du discours des intellectuels. Son analyse met en lumière trois périodes correspondant à trois modes d'intervention. La première « prémodernité » (de la fin du 18e siècle à 1918, environ) est marquée par l'inclusion des intellectuels dans le champ politique, d'où ils émergent graduellement comme groupe distinct. Dans la deuxième (entre 1918 et 1978), celle de la modernité proprement dite, le politique est subordonné à l'intellectuel : « les idées mènent le monde ». Enfin, la période actuelle, celle de la postmodernité, voit se dessiner une nouvelle configuration où les sphères politique et intellectuelle se dissocient. Cette histoire des intellectuels québécois et de leur rapport au monde permet de mieux comprendre la situation actuelle. Il n'y a pas, comme plusieurs l'ont affirmé, « silence des intellectuels », mais plutôt transformation des modalités de leur prise de parole, transformation liée à celle du champ politique et à l'échec — relatif — du projet moderne. Andrée Fortin est professeure au Département de sociologie de l'Université Laval.
