Questo libro raccoglie gli atti del secondo Convegno nazionale dei dottorati italiani dell’architettura, della pianificazione e del design La ricerca che cambia, svoltosi il 1° e il 2 dicembre 2016 presso la Scuola di dottorato dell’Università Iuav di Venezia. L'obiettivo che si pone è duplice: da una parte lasciare una traccia, sia pur sintetica, di quanto è stato esposto e dibattuto nelle sessioni plenarie del convegno e nei workshop dei coordinatori, dall’altra dare ampio spazio alle questioni affrontate dalle tesi di dottorato selezionate attraverso un processo di selezione anonima e presentate in tavoli di discussione paralleli. Sono otto i temi che, in maniera trasversale alle diverse discipline, costituiscono i fuochi di interesse intorno a cui si articolano i vari capitoli di questo e-book: cambiamenti, luoghi, modelli, narrazioni, riusi, spazi, storie, strutture. I saggi affrontano questioni che attengono a tali temi secondo gli specifici punti di vista dei molti settori disciplinari che spaziano dall'ICAR/10 all'ICAR/21. Per quanto distanti possano sembrare specializzazioni e competenze di questi settori, essi hanno le stesse radici e sono sicuramente ancora dialoganti. This handbook focuses on the often neglected dimension of interpretation in educational research. It argues that all educational research is in some sense ‘interpretive’, and that understanding this issue belies some usual dualisms of thought and practice, such as the sharp dichotomy between ‘qualitative’ and ‘quantitative’ research. Interpretation extends from the very framing of the research task, through the sources which constitute the data, the process of their recording, representation and analysis, to the way in which the research is finally or provisionally presented. The thesis of the handbook is that interpretation cuts across the fields (both philosophically, organizationally and methodologically). By covering a comprehensive range of research approaches and methodologies, the handbook gives (early career) researchers what they need to know in order to decide what particular methods can offer for various educational research contexts/fields. An extensive overview includes concrete examples of different kinds of research (not limited for example to ‘teaching’ and ‘learning’ examples as present in the Anglo-Saxon tradition, but including as well what in the German Continental tradition is labelled ‘pädagogisch’, examples from child rearing and other contexts of non-formal education) with full description and explanation of why these were chosen in particular circumstances and reflection on the wisdom or otherwise of the choice – combined in each case with consideration of the role of interpretation in the process. The handbook includes examples of a large number of methods traditionally classified as qualitative, interpretive and quantitative used across the area of the study of education. Examples are drawn from across the globe, thus exemplifying the different ‘opportunities and constraints’ that educational research has to confront in different societies.

This book focuses on race and ethnography, and in particular, it addresses two significant issues. Firstly, leading thinkers and emerging scholars in the field explicate the complicated nature of race intersections, theories, and meanings in educational ethnography. This volume is the result of the presentations and discussions carried out at the Conference on “Early Foreign Language Learning in Educational Contexts. Bridging Good Practices and Research” organized by the University Ramon Lull, the University of Bari and LEND (Lingua e Nuova Didattica) in March 2010. At the Conference, both teachers and researchers met to examine recent language teaching theories and practices from a transnational and intercultural perspective, on the one hand, and on the other, to fill the gap in the field of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in schools and to pave the way for a wider platform of discussion between School and University. Since these two institutions have often had little contact and, as there is excellent work carried out in both, our attempt was to build more solid bridges across their contexts, engaging school teachers in ongoing research and bringing everyday classroom practice nearer to university theoreticians in an open exchange forum so that the reflection on teaching and learning becomes relevant and rewarding for the participants involved in Early Foreign Language Learning in 21st century contexts. Drawing on the main topics presented throughout the Conference, this book has been structured around three main thematic areas: 1) the Age Factor, 2) CLIL and Content-based research and practices, and 3) developing intercultural competence: use of the L1 and translation as mediation skills. Each of these sections encompasses high quality contributions, all informed by salient and recent research, clear and justified theoretical standpoints and good practices which are appealing to an international audience and setting. The editors sincerely hope that this volume contributes to widen the field of foreign language teaching and learning to include studies on young learners’ perceptions and performance. At the same time, they would like to highlight the decisive new focus on language learning adopted in the 21st century: the inclusion of a wider vision of language acquisition, one that highlights the relevance of using languages not only to communicate but, more relevantly, to mediate between cultures, as a means to bring together the plurilingual and pluricultural citizens of our future.
