This volume examines the Italian peninsula in the early Middle Ages by focusing on research fields such as ethnic identity, memory, and use of the past. Particular attention is devoted to the way some authors were influenced by their own ‘present’ in their reconstruction of the past. The political and cultural fragmentation of Italy during the early Middles Ages, created by the Lombards’ invasion of a part of the Peninsula in the late-sixth century and early-seventh century, Charlemagne’s conquest of a part of the Lombard Kingdom in 774, and by the weakening of the Byzantine Empire in the eighth and ninth centuries, make this part of Europe a special area for exploring continuities and discontinuities between the Roman and the post-Roman periods in Western Europe. Mentre le cronache registrano quotidianamente la morte in mare di decine di "clandestini", gran parte dei mezzi di comunicazione di massa alimenta senza sosta il panico sull'"invasione" del nostro paese da parte di immigrati poveri provenienti dal Terzo mondo. Non si tratta in realtà di una lettura specifica dei soli media, ma di un più complessivo atteggiamento di chiusura della società italiana verso gli stranieri, trasformati in nemici sociali attraverso la doppia spirale di panico ed esclusione. Buona ultima, anche la sfera della politica non sembra essere consapevole del problema del riconoscimento dei diritti di cittadinanza ai nuovi migranti. A questi sviluppi inquietanti non è certo estranea la riscoperta della "nazione-Italia" e anche della "patria italiana", cioè di un sentimento comune su cui si fonderebbe l'appartenenza nazionale. Non solo questa rivendicazione appare particolarmente debole, ma essa coincide con un processo di inferiorizzazione delle altre società - i paesi più poveri, le regioni arretrate dell'Italia stessa, le aree meno ricche delle regioni dominanti -, un atteggiamento mentale presente indifferentemente a destra come a sinistra. Nel descrivere gli umori più profondi della società italiana l'autore - tra i più importanti sociologi italiani - si schiera in modo deciso, in un libro polemico, documentato e destinato a far discutere, perché in gioco sono i lineamenti fondamentali della convivenza civile e i contenuti più profondi su cui si regge la nostra democrazia.
