Conceptual art, body art, transavanguardia, postmoderno rappresentano tappe di un costante processo di riduzione che gli artisti contemporanei hanno operato nei confronti dei piani teorici dell’arte e dell’estetica. La valutazione estetica non ha potuto liquidare questi casi come deviazioni da ciò che l’arte deve essere. Non vale più, infatti, la vecchia abitudine di rifarsi a una definizione dell’arte secondo i modelli della tradizione moderna promulgati nel Settecento a partire da Batteux. Ciò è stato possibile grazie all’assunto kantiano per cui in estetica sono ammessi solo giudizi singolari. Per Kant, se dichiaro bella la rosa che guardo, secondo un giudizio di gusto, non posso poi postulare che tutte le rose siano belle. Questa posizione kantiana chiarisce bene quanto è avvenuto: gran parte delle operazioni artistiche dei nostri giorni infatti non sarebbero state possibili senza la convalida del giudizio singolare. Le arti contemporanee hanno così approfittato di questa libertà per emanciparsi dall’estetica, dall’accademia e dalla tradizione e avviarsi verso i promettenti territori della trasgressione e della follia.
