Este libro reune la poesia que Jorge Luis Borges escribio entre 1972 y 1975. El titulo alude a la rosa eterna de los poetas; la rosa invisible sonada por Milton; esa que Borges, ciego, ya no distingue pero que es para el imagen del mundo. Estas paginas encierran ademas varios otros temas y motivos que, con el tiempo y los libros, han ido poblando el universo literario, no por familiar menos maravilloso, del gran escritor argentino: las mascaras, la nostalgia de la espada, las sombras tutelares, los inventarios y las enumeraciones, la arbitrariedad del tiempo humano, la inexorabilidad del destino, los espejos... Sobre la poesia afirmaba el autor en el prologo: La palabra habria sido en el principio un simbolo magico, que la usura del tiempo desgastaria. La mision del poeta seria restituir a la palabra, siquiera de un modo parcial, su primitiva y ahora oculta virtud. Dos deberes tendria todo verso: comunicar un hecho preciso y tocarnos fisicamente, como la cercania del mar.
