Poiché il Corano loda coloro che raccomandano il bene e contrastano ciò che è proibito, nella cultura islamica sono diffuse le parole di insegnamento e di saggezza che elogiano il comportamento onesto e moderato e biasimano l’irriconoscenza e l’impazienza di chi dimentica la sottomissione a Dio. Annemarie Schimmel ha raccolto, scelto e tradotto alcune di queste massime di saggezza. Tra le altre sono riportate le parole di Ali ibn Abi Talib, cugino e genero del profeta Maometto; degli hadīth riferiscono le parole del Profeta e i racconti delle sue azioni; dei Sufi, i mistici dell’islam che si preoccupano soprattutto del comportamento etico e dello sviluppo interiore dell’uomo; del persiano Ibn al-Muqaffa’, che introdusse il genere letterario degli adab (ossia “buona educazione”, “buone maniere”: raccolte di massime morali esposte in uno stile garbato e leggero); delle sentenze gnomiche di epoca ellenistica; dei consigli per i membri di singole professioni (ad esempio, “l’etichetta del segretario”) o dei consigli per i sovrani; del Gulistān (“il giardino delle rose”) di Saadi, opera che ha entusiasmato lettori come Herder e Goethe, e lettura obbligata per ogni bambino musulmano che dovesse imparare il persiano; di grandi poeti mistici come Faridaddin ‘Attar e Ğalaladdin Rumi. Queste massime riguardano l’inconoscibile unità del Dio rivelato nel Corano, che non può essere descritto con parole né compreso con l’intelletto. Un Dio che si manifesta all’uomo e nel mondo nella dualità: sotto forma di bellezza e grazia assoluta o sotto forma di assoluta violenza e severità. L’uomo deve perciò muoversi nello spazio angusto tra bene e male, tra indulgenza e severità, cercando di stare nel mezzo. E l’ambivalenza riguarda tanto la terra – per alcuni pericolosa e malvagia eppure luogo dove bisogna agire e prepararsi per l’aldilà, per i mistici invece specchio dei nomi e delle opere di Dio – quanto l’uomo – che può decidere di essere superiore agli angeli o inferiore agli animali sulla strada che porta a Dio.

Una preziosa raccolta di aforismi, massime, poesie e preghiere.Per Hazrat Inayat Khan l’arte è un mezzo per esprimere la concezione spirituale Sufi. Egli divenne così il musicista dell’anima. Ecco quanto dice riguardo alla sua rinuncia alla musica: “Ho rinunciato alla musica perché da essa avevo ricevuto tutto ciò che dovevo ricevere... Ora non sono più gli strumenti che voglio accordare ma le anime. Se vi è qualcosa nei miei pensieri filosofici è la legge dell’armonia; come ci si deve mettere in armonia con se stessi e con gli altri. Ho trovato che in ogni parola vi è un valore musicale, che vi è melodia in ogni pensiero, un’armonia in ogni sentimento. Suonai la Vina fino a quando il mio cuore si trasformò in questo strumento; ho offerto allora questo strumento al Musico Divino: l’Unico Musico che esiste. Da allora sono diventato il Suo flauto e quando Egli lo desidera io suono la sua musica. Le persone che mi ascoltano mi attribuiscono il merito di questa melodia; in realtà; non è dovuta a me, ma al Musico che suona”. Questo libro è composto da due opere: “Gayan” e “Vadan”; “Gayan” significa “Canto”, ed il carattere ritmico dell’opera esprime l’Armonia del Pensiero Divino di cui questi insegnamenti sono le note che si rivelano all’anima. “Vadan” ha il senso di “Sinfonia Divina”, la cui esecuzione è lo scopo della Creazione e ogni anima fa parte di questa sinfonia; tutta la natura lo manifesta, e quando il cuore si espande, quando l’anima si risveglia; la Divina Sinfonia diventa udibile.
