Episcopado y secularización en la España del siglo XIX constituye una aportación singular al análisis de dicho fenómeno social. El libro está estructurado en cinco apartados. El primero plantea el marco general de la secularización en Francia y España. El segundo trata el impacto de la revolución liberal en la Iglesia española. El tercero analiza la visión del episcopado del proceso de secularización y los medios propuestos para frenarlo. El cuarto se dedica a conocer la evolución de las prácticas religiosas en este siglo. En las conclusiones se remarca el papel de la Iglesia ante la secularización creciente. Los obispos creen que provoca la indiferencia religiosa y el abandono de las conductas cristianas. Las nuevas doctrinas (socialismo, comunismo, anarquismo, masonería y laicismo), derivadas del liberalismo, conducen inexorablemente a la descristianización y al ateísmo práctico.

Este libro quiere ser una aportación novedosa a la historia española del proceso secularizador. Su propósito es demostrar que se puede hablar de secularización en España antes de que la noción tenga efectiva productividad jurídica y constitucional. El periodo elegido (1700-1845) es precisamente época clave de las interrogaciones sobre secularización de lo político; pero tales interrogaciones son heterogéneas, ya que la propia idea de secularización se pone a debate y está sometida a múltiples bloqueos. Parece empezar a funcionar entonces un proceso de secularización social y cultural antes que político. En efecto, la influencia secularizadora de las ideas de la Ilustración conlleva cambios sociales y nuevas prácticas culturales, científicas y artísticas, que transforman, hasta en el seno de la Iglesia, la percepción de lo sagrado. Tales cambios ocasionan, a principios del siglo xix, la ruptura de la convención entre la Monarquía, la Iglesia y la Nación.

The origins of the Spanish novel date back to the early picaresque novels and Don Quixote, in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and the history of the genre in Spain presents the reader with such iconic works as Galdós's Fortunata and Jacinta, Clarín's La Regenta, or Unamuno's Mist. A History of the Spanish Novel traces the developments of Spanish prose fiction in order to offer a comprehensive and detailed account of this important literary tradition. It opens with an introductory chapter that examines the evolution of the novel in Spain, with particular attention to the rise and emergence of the novel as a genre, during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and the bearing of Golden-Age fiction in later novelists of all periods.
