La segunda parte de la célebre novela picaresca se publicó por primera vez en Amberes (Bélgica) en 1555, sin que figurase nombre de autor, aunque algunos especialistas la atribuyen a un tal fray Manuel de Oporto. Su argumento se aleja mucho de la primera, ya que consiste en una fantasía alegórica en la que el protagonista se convierte en atún, se casa con una atuna y tiene hijos de su misma naturaleza, llevando a cabo todo tipo de guerras en la Corte de los atunes contra otro tipo de peces. Se especula con la teoría de que el desconocido autor, que podía ser un español residente en Flandes, quería aludir con esta sátira a personajes y sucesos de la vida española de la época, pero la obra tuvo poco éxito y solo se reimprimió en Milán en 1587 y 1615. Sin embargo, esta obra dio lugar a que se publicara otra segunda parte del Lazarillo en París en 1620. Su autor, Juan de Luna, fue un protestante que vivió en la capital francesa y en Londres y que al leer La segunda parte de Lazarillo de Tormes y de sus fortunas y adversidades consideró que difería tanto de la primera que debía escribir otra mejor. Luna, que era toledano y conocía el ambiente que rodeaba la novela original, se propuso así escribir una que fuera más digna y realista.

The author explores the rivalries between apocryphal and authorized sequelists that forged modern notions of authorship and authorial property. The book also defines the sequel's forms and functions, filling a major gap in literary theory in general and Peninsular literary studies in particular. Notably, the author demonstrates that the sequel develops first and foremost in Early Modern Spain, an unacknowledged and unexamined contribution to Western letters. With its panoramic scope, this study serves as an introduction to the central novelistic genres and texts of Early Modern Spain. From this foundational starting point, it alsooffers a general framework for understanding imaginative expansion in subsequent time periods and literary traditions. William H. Hinrichs is a founding faculty member and Assistant Professor of Modern Languages at Bard High School Early College, Queens.
