En las relaciones entre cine y literatura no hay reglas fijas en cuanto al posible resultado final. Y en el caso de James Joyce, con su magistral e inconfundible uso del lenguaje, este resultado ha de ser forzosamente desigual. En un autor como Joyce, capaz de plasmar los más diversos géneros literarios en su obra, amén de crear el suyo propio, la adaptación fílmica de sus obras requiere necesariamente un tratamiento diferente para cada una de ellas, de acuerdo con el característico estilo del referente literario. En una pelicula como A Painful Case (Un Triste Caso), basada en una obra con una estructura y estilo absolutamente convencionales, no sorprende la tremenda fidelidad del filme al discurso literario, cumpliéndose en el discurso fílmico lo que Sergei Eisenstein considerara el principal objetivo a seguir: " la re-elaboración crítica del texto". Asi, de toda la filmografía basada en obras de James Joyce, es ésta, sin duda, la película que ofrece una mayor fidelidad a su referente literario. Passages from Finnegans Wake (Pasajes de Finnegans Wake) resulta un auténtico "descubrimiento", con el que su directora, Mary Ellen Bute, mediante la invención de originales efectos como el seeing sound, consigue " traducir" al cine la extraordinaria musicalidad e infinitud de imágenes del lenguaje de Joyce, pudiendo apreciar el espectador del filme esa envolvente sensación de deslizameinto por el mundo de los sueños, tan omnipresente en Finnegans Wake.
