Going beyond exclusively national perspectives, this volume considers the reception of the ancient Greek poet Sappho and her first Latin translator, Catullus, as a literary pair who transmit poetic culture across the world from the early 20th century to the present. Sappho's and Catullus' reception has shaped a transnational network of poets and intellectuals, helping to define ideas of origins, gender, sexuality and national identities. This book shows that across time and cultures translations and rewritings of Sappho and Catullus articulate modernist poetics of myth and fragmentation, forms of confessionalism and post-modern pastiche. The inquiry focuses on Italian and North American poetry as two central yet understudied hubs of Sappho's and Catullus' modern reception, also linked by a rich mutual intellectual exchange: key case-studies include Giovanni Pascoli, Ezra Pound, H.D., Salvatore Quasimodo, Robert Lowell, Rosita Copioli and Anne Carson, and cover a wide range of unpublished archival material. Texts are analysed and compared through reception and translation theories and inserted within the current debate on the Classics as World Literature, demonstrating how sustained transnational poetic discourse employs the ancient pair to expand notions of literary origins and redefine poetry's relationship to human existence.

Così Gianni Rodari, che vedeva nel narratore danese un grande innovatore e sperimentatore del genere favolistico. Infatti, mentre i fratelli Grimm per la loro raccolta attinsero prevalentemente al folklore e alle fonti tradizionali del popolo tedesco, Andersen fa della materia esistente il punto di partenza per le sue elaborazioni fantastiche, per le sue invenzioni anche stilistiche. Prende spesso spunto da episodi della sua vita, cosicché l’elemento tradizionale si intreccia e compenetra con il vissuto personale – esperienza reale o memoria di un racconto ascoltato da bambino – per poi lasciar libera la fantasia di galoppare e percorrere strade di cui egli stesso si stupisce. La novità e la diversità della sua opera scandalizzarono gli accademici e disorientarono i lettori, sia per l’introduzione della lingua parlata in ambito letterario, sia per le invenzioni anche sintattiche e grammaticali in cui ci si imbatte leggendo i suoi testi. Ma proprio attraverso queste “sconvenienti” deviazioni dalla regola e dalla tradizione, il narratore riesce a incantare, a trasmettere l’intima poesia di un animo sensibilissimo, a esprimere l’essenza dello spirito popolare danese, allegro, scanzonato, bonario e saggio. Le meravigliose favole di Andersen sono un capolavoro universale e senza tempo. Hans Christian Andersen nacque nel 1805 a Odense, in Danimarca. Rimase orfano del padre a 11 anni e compì gli studi in modo poco costante. Grazie a un sussidio governativo poté viaggiare a lungo in Europa e in Italia. Nonostante abbia sperimentato diversi generi letterari – scrisse infatti anche romanzi e opere drammatiche – la sua fama resta legata alle fiabe, cui si dedicò con passione tra il 1835 e il 1872, tradotte in quasi tutte le lingue del mondo. Morì nel 1875.
