Lo stesso Dumas ne realizzò una versione teatrale, affidandola a Sarah Bernhardt. Pochi anni dopo, Giuseppe Verdi saprà farne una trasposizione sublime, in musica, con La Traviata. Margherita Gautier, alias Violetta, è diventata così una figura a sé stante: un mito appunto, con il quale si sono confrontate dive come Eleonora Duse, Greta Garbo, Maria Callas. André Maurois ha scritto: «La signora delle camelie fa capire perché Maupassant e Tolstoj considerassero Dumas figlio uno dei più grandi romanzieri del loro tempo». Per Irene Bignardi è «il romanzo sul prezzo della donna», amante o moglie che sia, traviata o no. «C’era, in quella donna, qualcosa che somigliava al candore. Si vedeva benissimo che era ancora alla verginità del vizio. Il passo deciso, la figura slanciata, le narici rosee e aperte, i grandi occhi leggermente cerchiati di azzurro, denotavano una di quelle creature ardenti, che spandono tutt’intorno un profumo di voluttà, come quei flaconi d’Oriente...» Alexandre Dumas (figlio) figlio dell’Alexandre Dumas autore de I tre moschettieri, nacque a Parigi, nel 1824. Il romanzo La signora delle camelie, ispirato alla figura della sua amante, Alphonsine Duplessis, gli aprì, ancora giovanissimo, le porte del successo. Tra le altre sue opere ricordiamo La società equivoca (1855), L’amico delle donne (1864) e Francillon (1887). Morì a Marly-le-Roy nel 1895.

Set in mid-19th-century France, the novel tells the love story between Marguerite Gautier, a demimondaine or courtesan and Armand Duval, a young bourgeois. La Dame aux Camélias is a semi-autobiographical novel based on the author's brief love affair with a courtesan, Marie Duplessis.

During 1844 Dumas met Marie Duplessis, a Young courtesan who supposedly was the inspiration for his novel The Lady of the Camellias (La Dame aux camélias). Of course the heroine's name was changed to Marguerite Gautier. The novel was later adapted into a play, and it was titled Camille in English. This same play became the basis for Verdi's opera, La Traviata. Although the intrigues, overall plot, and denouement may be easy to guess, the narrating voices hold the story in complete suspense to the bitter end. The acts of both, helpers and principals, advance relentlessly as told by four different narrators: an unnamed voice (presumably the author's), Armand Duval, Marguerite Gautier, and Juliet Duprat (a friend). La Dame aux camellias is a timeless story that will continue to captivate readers for many generations to come.
