During the sixteenth century, antiquarian studies (the study of the material past, comprising modern archaeology, epigraphy, and numismatics) rose in Europe in parallel to the technical development of the printing press. Some humanists continued to prefer the manuscript form to disseminate their findings – as numerous fair copies of sylloges and treatises attest –, but slowly the printed medium grew in popularity, with its obvious advantages but also its many challenges. As antiquarian printed works appeared, the relationship between manuscript and printed sources also became less linear: printed copies of earlier works were annotated to serve as a means of research, and printed works could be copied by hand – partially or even completely. This book explores how antiquarian literature (collections of inscriptions, treatises, letters...) developed throughout the sixteenth century, both in manuscript and in print; how both media interacted with each other, and how these printed antiquarian works were received, as attested by the manuscript annotations left by their early modern owners and readers.

La poesia di Aldo Belladonna riesce a intrecciare abilmente l’ “alto” e il “basso”, non in senso stilistico ma come direzione cui guarda il poeta. La realtà, cioè il basso, può essere letta e decifrata solo con la lente dei valori, ovvero l’alto. Tuttavia, il punto di vista resta sempre quello dell’autore, che trasporta nella sua poesia il bagaglio del proprio vissuto, della propria esperienza personale, come si può chiaramente evincere. Aldo Belladonna ha conosciuto in prima persona ciò di cui parla e si preoccupa di condividerlo, di comunicarlo il più possibile, per questo il suo stile non è ampolloso, ma diretto e chiaro. Aldo Belladonna è nato a Cesa, in provincia di Caserta, il 14 febbraio 1947, e vive a Milano dal 1962. Fin da giovanissimo ha avuto ispirazione per la scrittura, che ha coltivato in modo inizialmente privato fino al 1987, anno in cui partecipò con Dentro al “Premio letterario Internazionale” omaggio a Dante Alighieri di Roma. The intellectual societies known as Academies played a vital role in the development of culture, and scholarly debate throughout Italy between 1525-1700. They were fundamental in establishing the intellectual networks later defined as the ‘République des Lettres’, and in the dissemination of ideas in early modern Europe, through print, manuscript, oral debate and performance. This volume surveys the social and cultural role of Academies, challenging received ideas and incorporating recent archival findings on individuals, networks and texts. Ranging over Academies in both major and smaller or peripheral centres, these collected studies explore the interrelationships of Academies with other cultural forums. Individual essays examine the fluid nature of academies and their changing relationships to the political authorities; their role in the promotion of literature, the visual arts and theatre; and the diverse membership recorded for many academies, which included scientists, writers, printers, artists, political and religious thinkers, and, unusually, a number of talented women. Contributions by established international scholars together with studies by younger scholars active in this developing field of research map out new perspectives on the dynamic place of the Academies in early modern Italy. The publication results from the research collaboration ‘The Italian Academies 1525-1700: the first intellectual networks of early modern Europe’ funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and is edited by the senior investigators.

Definire libro quello che ho scritto non è esatto dato che non racconta una storia e nemmeno una biografia. II contenuto si riassume praticamente nel titolo ed è come fare un viaggio nella nostra vita. Dato che a volte i viaggi sono lunghi e noiosi, ho cercato di renderne la lettura il più breve e piacevole possibile. Sono brani che accomunano un po' tutti, o almeno la maggiore parte di noi. Alcuni possono dare l'impressione di voler ironizzare sugli episodi della vita che più ci fanno male, ma sono scritti con l'intento di sdrammatizzarli.

Luigi Tansillo is one of the most interesting and representative of the Petrarchist poets active in Naples during the mid-sixteenth century. This study reconsiders his substantial lyric corpus from a variety of perspectives, opening with a survey of the textual tradition and previous critical work on his verse. Four of Tansillo's lyric collections are examined in depth, and read from narrative and thematic points of view. Particular emphasis is placed on the evolution of the collections, by exploring the ways in which very different types of narrative implying different underlying poetics can be constructed using often identical poems. Parallel to this is a consideration of Tansillo's place within the broader literary historical context, and his use of verse as a political and ideological tool in the service of the Spanish viceroy of Naples. These detailed studies of individual poetic sequences are complemented by an analysis of Tansillo's poetic language within the context of Neapolitan reactions to the questione della lingua, and of his contribution to creating a fixed iconology for the representation of jealousy in the Renaissance and Baroque lyric.
