The failure to manage cultural diversity in Morocco and Equatorial Guinea in an egalitarian manner has been linked to the hallmark of colonialism. First, because the policy practiced upon Arabs and Moroccan Imazighen since the French colonization comprised one of the reasonings employed to justify the pro-Arab policies developed after independence. Second, because the discriminatory policy deployed by Spain in Equatorial Guinea, was overridden by the installation of a dictatorship that established a system of Fang predominance. This book clarifies the degree to which the Spanish colonization is responsible for the present-day management of cultural diversity in both countries.

Alternative Iron Ages examines Iron Age social formations that sit outside traditional paradigms, developing methods for archaeological characterisation of alternative models of society. In so doing it contributes to the debates concerning the construction and resistance of inequality taking place in archaeology, anthropology and sociology. In recent years, Iron Age research on Western Europe has moved towards new forms of understanding social structures. Yet these alternative social organisations continue to be considered as basic human social formations, which frequently imply marginality and primitivism. In this context, the grand narrative of the European Iron Age continues to be defined by cultural foci, which hide the great regional variety in an artificially homogenous area. This book challenges the traditional classical evolutionist narratives by exploring concepts such as non-triangular societies, heterarchy and segmentarity across regional case studies to test and propose alternative social models for Iron Age social formations. Constructing new social theory both archaeologically based and supported by sociological and anthropological theory, the book is perfect for those looking to examine and understand life in the European Iron Age. Tribe and Society in Rural Morocco is a collection of 11 articles based on fieldwork and ethnographic studies conducted on Moroccan Berber-speaking tribes in particular, among the Aith Waryaghar in the Northern part, the Ait Atta in the South-central Atlas, and the Saghru. Although Arabs and Berbers have lived side by side in Morocco for many years, it is quite evident that the Berber element is very much more than just a remainder. Instead it is 'the backbone' of Moroccan nation and even the foundation of the whole North African structure. Its presence is still very strong even today (p.26). Three different sets of Berber tribal groups exist in Morocco: Tashilhit of the Western high and Anti-Atlas, Tamazight in the Middle Atlas, and Tharifith in the Rif. Today, all Berbers tend to refer to themselves as Imazighen [...] This collection is divided into two parts. In the first part, Hart portrays various features of the precolonial socio-cultural, socio-economic and socio-political organization and customary law of various of Berber-speaking groups.
