Xenophon has for long, and understandably, enjoyed a privileged position as a reliable source on Sparta. Commander of a grand military expedition of Sparta's devising, and a dependent of Sparta's influential king Agesilaos, Xenophon knew Sparta from the inside, and - as himself an Athenian in exile - was well placed to comment on Sparta's difference. The simplicity of his Greek style has a perfume of honesty. And yet... Recent research has with increasing force called into doubt Xenophon's motives and truthfulness - especially as regards Sparta. Analysis of his Hellenica reveals much evasion and euphemism about Sparta's failings - complicated by occasional outbursts against the iniquity of Spartan imperialism. His euphemistic Constitution of the Lakedaimonians (itself containing such an outburst), and his near-hagiography of the dead Agesilaos, have variously evoked trust and suspicion in historians. This book, by a distinguished team of specialists in Spartan history, is the first of a short series from CPW, approaching Spartan reality by way of close analysis of our main contemporary Greek sources: their access, their biases, the literary structure and the genre of their works.

Di fede cristiana, con molta probabilità un grammatico, ci ha lasciato opere quali i Libri mitologiarum, la Virgiliana Continentia, l’Expositio sermonum antiquorum e il De aetatibus mundi et hominis: che, pur avendo prestato il fianco a più di una critica sotto il profilo filologico, hanno del pari goduto di grande prestigio durante il Medio Evo (ed oltre). Fulgenzio si fece promotore di un tentativo di sintesi tra cultura classica e cultura cristiana. Nei suoi scritti traspaiono sicure competenze giuridiche le quali, oltre che per l’utilizzazione di un lessico adeguato, si lasciano soprattutto apprezzare per i numerosi riferimenti (diretti o mediati) al diritto sacro della religione tradizionale romana. Inoltre, recependo il concetto lineare del tempo in virtù delle conoscenze bibliche, propose un modello di storia che individuava nella nascita del Cristo l’avvento definitivo di una nova saeculi aetas per l’umanità, pur nell’ambito di un genere letterario antico.

An interdisciplinary approach, crucial as it is in most fields of research, proves itself to be unescapable in the study of interactions between the ancient Armenian and Greek worlds and literatures. The volume arises from such an awareness and collects papers presented in a conference which has been organized in 2013 at the University of Genova, thanks to a cooperation with the Université Paris-Sorbonne, following in the footsteps of a tradition inaugurated by Giancarlo Bolognesi in the years '80 and '90. The subject is explored from many points of view: the topic of Armenian translations of Greek texts – with considerations of a methodological nature and the discussion of case-studies –, aspects which pertain to the historical context and the historiographical sources, the wide theme of the Armenian reception of Biblical, Christian and Byzantine literature, and finally philological, linguistic and lexical problems.
