Existen diferentes definiciones del concepto currículum e importantes divergencias en cuanto a su significado, lo que refleja, en parte, las ideas cambiantes sobre la escolarización y sus funciones. Con independencia del nivel, precisión y alcance de las distintas teorías curriculares, todas ellas se basan en diversos supuestos: filosóficos, que estudian cómo se forma el conocimiento; sociohistóricos, que analizan el significado de una organización específica del conocimiento en un contexto social; y los que se centran en la adquisición y procesamiento del conocimiento. LUNDGREN expone en esta obra cómo se ha desarrollado el concepto de currículum y explica la forma en que los fines, el contenido y los procesos educativos son parte de dinámicas tanto históricas como sociales, económicas y políticas. Detrás de cualquier currículum existe un conjunto de principios según los cuales se lleva a cabo la selección, la organización y los métodos de transmisión de los contenidos educativos. Este conjunto homogéneo es lo que el autor denomina «código curricular». LUNDGREN realiza un sugerente análisis de cómo la educación llega a institucionalizarse. Distingue cinco períodos en la historia de la pedagogía que conllevan propuestas curriculares específicas, fruto de los cambios en los «códigos curriculares» dominantes en las diferentes etapas históricas: el código curricular clásico, el realista, el moral, el racional y el invisible. Llegar a comprender el impacto de los currícula contemporáneos o construir otros nuevos supone explicar y entender cómo se interrelacionan en nuestra situación actual las condiciones materiales básicas, los contextos sociales y los modelos de pensamiento.

The discovery of the New World raised many questions for early modern scientists: What did these lands contain? Where did they lie in relation to Europe? Who lived there, and what were their inhabitants like? Imperial expansion necessitated changes in the way scientific knowledge was gathered, and Spanish cosmographers in particular were charged with turning their observations of the New World into a body of knowledge that could be used for governing the largest empire the world had ever known. As María M. Portuondo here shows, this cosmographic knowledge had considerable strategic, defensive, and monetary value that royal scientists were charged with safeguarding from foreign and internal enemies. Cosmography was thus a secret science, but despite the limited dissemination of this body of knowledge, royal cosmographers applied alternative epistemologies and new methodologies that changed the discipline, and, in the process, how Europeans understood the natural world.
