L’idea di un Convegno internazionale su La teoria del restauro nel Novecento da Riegl a Brandi è nata dall’esigenza di ricostruire le tappe fondamentali che hanno fatto del restauro un concetto centrale dell’odierno orizzonte culturale fino a culminare nella Teoria del restauro pubblicata da Cesare Brandi nel 1963. Fedeli all’articolazione del Convegno, gli atti che ora si pubblicano muovono da Aloi Riegl e dal contesto europeo per proseguire attraverso il contributo di altri protagonisti e concezioni: dalle sporadiche ma lucide prese di posizione di Roberto Longhi agli apporti di Corrado Ricci, Giulio Carlo Argan, Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti e Bruno Zevi. Inserita in questo plesso storico-culturale, la Teoria del Restauro è stata quindi indagata in quanto fulcro di un ampio spettro di ambiti e problematiche che, in sintonia con la proteiforme attività di Brandi, ha visto il coinvolgimento di studiosi di estetica, storici dell’arte, architetti, archeologi. Per altri versi, l’aver affrontato le vicende relative alla nascita e all’attività dell’Istituto Centrale per il Restauro ha consentito alcuni importanti approfondimenti su aspetti tecnico-specialistici e rivelato gli intrecci tra esigenze conservative e scelte museografiche.

Un'agile ricostruzione delle principali posizioni teoriche e dei protagonisti del dibattito artistico e politico culturale relativo all'universo del restauro in Italia, dal secondo dopoguerra all'avvento del digitale. Questo libro ricostruisce le posizioni teoriche dei principali protagonisti del dibattito artistico, politico e culturale relativo alle modalità e agli obiettivi del restauro in Italia, dalla Carta di Atene del 1931 al secondo dopoguerra, al digitale. Quel celebre documento, nato dall'esigenza di trovare modelli largamente condivisibili nelle metodologie del restauro, intendeva reagire all'eccessiva individualizzazione delle procedure che governavano il settore. La creazione dell'Istituto Centrale del Restauro diretto da Cesare Brandi, nel 1939, rappresentò una svolta decisiva in quella direzione. Negli anni Settanta, con Giovanni Urbani, si sarebbe imposta la necessità di privilegiare una conservazione preventiva e programmata di interi complessi artistici, partendo dai controlli ambientali e dalla rimozione delle cause del degrado. In seguito ai restauri delle opere travolte dall'Arno nel 1966, diretti da Umberto Baldini, l'Opificio delle Pietre Dure divenne un secondo istituto centrale. Le energie scaturite in quegli anni, sul piano teorico e di metodo, segnano il grande riconoscimento del restauro italiano anche sul piano internazionale. In tempi piú recenti, i contraccolpi che la fine delle ideologie e la globalizzazione hanno comportato per la conservazione del patrimonio, insieme alla vertiginosa accelerazione imposta dalla ricerca scientifica alle nuove tecnologie, avrebbero messo inesorabilmente in crisi la stessa nozione di autenticità, uno dei fondamenti della teoria di Brandi. Anche il concetto di patrimonio artistico ha subito una profonda trasformazione che, con la Convenzione di Faro (2005), ha portato al centro del processo conservativo le comunità, imponendo un ripensamento complessivo delle attività di restauro.

The book presents for the first time the restoration of Amundsen’s glass slides, one of the most beautiful collections of slides in the world. The 248 slides are the photographic testimony of three great explorations: the Northwest Passage (1903-1906), the conquest of the South Pole (1910-1912) and the Maud expedition (1918-1925). Discovered by chance in 1986, the slides were restored in 2009 by Pietro Librici at the National Library of Norway, in a continuous cooperation with the institute team. La collezione dei dipinti dell’Accademia di San Luca è stata oggetto di diverse campagne di restauro tra il 1931, anno della demolizione dell’antica sede al Foro Romano, e il 1958, quando ha termine anche la lunga e complessa vicenda del restauro del «San Luca di Raffaello». La grande quantità di documenti emersa nel fondo novecentesco dell’Archivio Storico dell’Accademia testimonia l’affiorare e il perdurare di un animato dibattito intorno ai temi del restauro. Il testo analizza le convergenze e le divergenze che hanno caratterizzato il rapporto fra le posizioni assunte dagli accademici dell’istituzione romana e le istanze espresse da una parte da studiosi come Argan, Brandi e Longhi, considerati unitariamente, nonostante le peculiari convinzioni metodologiche, come esponenti di quel fronte critico che poneva il restauro al centro della riflessione sull’opera d’arte, e, dall’altra parte, da Pico Cellini, rappresentante di vertice di quella tradizione del restauro avvertita dagli accademici come più consentanea in quanto legata al fare artistico più che a speculazioni teoriche. La serie «Arti» pubblica libri dedicati alla storia dell’arte, della musica, del teatro e del cinema, discipline situate al cuore degli interessi di chi insegna e studia presso il Dipartimento di Storia dell’arte e spettacolo.
