Ma una volta nel casolare ecco la sorpresa: vi si sono rifugiati cinque ragazzi che appartengono a una comune, tipi loschi che forse nascondono qualcosa. Impossibilitati a fuggire quando la loro automobile viene danneggiata, Matteo e gli amici devono capire come affrontare il pericolo, soprattutto quando uno degli intrusi viene trovato morto all’ombra della Torre dei Matti. Sono in trappola, con un temibile assassino fra loro, proprio allo scoccare del due novembre. Marco Scarlatti è nato nel 1973 a Roma, dove vive e lavora. Ha pubblicato quattro romanzi, fra i quali il noir metropolitano Giovani come la notte (MDS, 2019) e il libro di fantascienza Il giorno dell’uragano (Kipple 2021), vincitore del Premio Kipple 2021. Col racconto Il buio sulle dune (Il Giallo Mondadori n. 1475, 2023) ha vinto la 50esima edizione del Gran Giallo – Città di Cattolica. Per Delos Digital ha pubblicato in versione ebook il saggio Jeeg Generation (2023). Il racconto Lo spettro dei sogni è apparso nella raccolta digitale Sorridi, bellezza! (Rizzoli, 2013). Con La torre dei matti è arrivato finalista al Premio Tedeschi 2022 del Giallo Mondadori.

When the wind of the 1960s blew through the world of psychiatry In 1961, when Franco Basaglia arrived outside the grim walls of the Gorizia asylum, on the Italian border with Yugoslavia, it was a place of horror, a Bedlam for the mentally sick and excluded, redolent of Basaglia’s own wartime experience inside a fascist gaol. Patients were frequently restrained for long periods, and therapy was largely a matter of electric and insulin shocks. The corridors stank, and for many of the interned the doors were locked for life. This was a concentration camp, not a hospital. Basaglia, the new Director, was expected to practise all the skills of oppression in which he had been schooled, but he would have none of this. The place had to be closed down by opening it up from the inside, bringing freedom and democracy to the patients, the nurses and the psychiatrists working in that “total institution.” Inspired by the writings of authors such as Primo Levi, R.D. Laing, Erving Goffman, Michel Foucault and Frantz Fanon, and the practices of experimental therapeutic communities in the UK, Basaglia’s seminal work as a psychiatrist and campaigner in Gorizia, Parma and Trieste fed into and substantially contributed to the national and international movement of 1968. In 1978 a law was passed (the “Basaglia law”) which sanctioned the closure of the entire Italian asylum system. The first comprehensive study of this revolutionary approach to mental health care, The Man Who Closed the Asylums is a gripping account of one of the most influential movements in twentieth-century psychiatry, which helped to transform the way we see mental illness. Basaglia’s work saved countless people from a miserable existence, and his legacy persists, as an object lesson in the struggle against the brutality and ignorance that the establishment peddles to the public as common sense.

This edited volume explores blindness as a construct with which we the contributors engage as part of our social existence and/or academic research. Irrespective of eye conditions, or the lack thereof, blindness is an understanding at which we have all come to arrive. On the way to this conceptual point, which is in any case unlikely ever to be fixed, we have passed or visited many formative cultural stations. In the terms of autocritical disability studies (i.e. an explicitly embodied development of critical disability studies), these cultural stations include key moments in education and training; the reflective pursuits of philosophy, aesthetics, and cultural theory; literary works such as autobiography, novels, short stories, drama, and poetry; visual texts ranging from photography to postage stamps; technological developments like television, computer applications, and social media; value systems defined by family and/or religion; and the social phenomenon of hate and war. Each chapter in this volume engages with two of these cultural stations; some ostensibly if not profoundly positive or indeed negative and some that contradict each other within and across chapters.
