Lo riconosceva lo stesso Freud: anche nelle famiglie tradizionali crescere un fi glio intelligente era difficilissimo. Cosa direbbe oggi? Tra famiglie allargate o separate, coppie aperte o ricomposte, per non parlare di genitori single o in carriera, le variabili sono aumentate a dismisura. Diminuiscono invece i fi gli, che quando arrivano sono accolti da genitori estasiati come un dono dal cielo, da riverire e ostentare, mai da educare. Risultato: stiamo allevando orde di bambini incapaci, viziati e immaturi, in una parola: imbecilli. E a darci manforte nel nostro errore di genitori ossequiosi, arrivano schiere di pediatri, psicologi ed "esperti" a vario titolo che sfornano solerti diagnosi (gratuite) di disagi comportamentali e vendono (carissime) le relative cure. Ma se questa imbecillità non fosse congenita — si chiede Piero Paolicchi — bensì il frutto di un'oculata strategia studiata apposta per crescere sudditi ottusi anziché cittadini dotati di spirito critico? Immagina allora cosa succederebbe se un coraggioso gruppo di genitori tentasse fi nalmente un'azione eversiva per smantellare questo sistema (dis)educativo, riprendendo da capo le fi la del pensiero e dell'esperienza pedagogica. Peccato però che due spie riescano a infi ltrarsi Costruito come un romanzo di spionaggio, questo arguto saggio si interroga con umorismo e buon senso sulle sorti dell'infanzia nel passato — dalla Bibbia a Steiner, dalla Montessori a Spock — e nel presente. Per scoprire che lo stato mentale dei nostri fi gli e quello forse ancora più preoccupante dei genitori ha una soluzione semplice ed evidente a chiunque si dedichi più alla pratica educativa e meno alla teoria: contro la "I" di imbecillità l'unico rimedio è la "B" di buonsenso. PIERO PAOLICCHI, psicologo, esercita la propria attività eversiva di docente presso l'Università di Pisa. Dopo la teoria generale dell'imbecillità, descritta nel suo precedente libro, Il fattore I, continua a essere ostinatamente ottimista e crede che, tutto sommato, la situazione sia "disperata ma non seria".
