L’imbarcazione, alla deriva in mezzo ai rottami e ai banchi di ghiaccio, navigò per ore tra i corpi degli annegati e tra coloro che invano invocavano aiuto prima di morire di freddo o stremati. Gli uomini sulla barca di fortuna furono costretti impietosamente a non prendere nessuno a bordo per non affondare. Molti dei nuotatori vennero respinti a colpi di remi. Gracie, una volta al sicuro sul Carpathia, il transatlantico britannico che trasse in salvo i naufraghi, iniziò subito a scrivere quello che poi è diventato uno dei libri definitivi sulla tragedia. La verità sul Titanic è il dettagliato resoconto non solo dell’esperienza personale di Gracie, di ciò che egli vide con i suoi occhi in quella terribile notte della sciagura, ma la registrazione delle testimonianze di ciascuno degli occupanti di tutte le scialuppe che vennero calate in acqua e abbandonarono la grande nave, e non solo dei passeggeri, ma anche dei membri dell’equipaggio e persino di coloro che si erano imbarcati clandestinamente a Southampton, infine delle testimonianze oculari sugli incidenti che si verificarono dentro e fuori la nave rilasciate dai passeggeri davanti alle commissioni d’inchiesta che vennero istituite in Inghilterra e in America.

He survived the sinking by climbing aboard an overturned collapsible lifeboat. He was pulled into lifeboat No. 12, the last lifeboat to reach RMS Carpathia (the first rescue ship to arrive). Gracie returned to New York aboard Carpathia and immediately started workingon a book about his experiences aboard Titanic and Collapsible "B". This book is one of the most detailed accounts of the events of the evening; The author spent months trying to determine exactly who was in each lifeboat and when certain events took place. To this day, Gracie's book is one of the most popular books about the Titanic disaster.
