Nella provincia del Capo di Buona Speranza, Grootmoedersdrift non è certo una fattoria modello quando, negli anni Cinquanta, Jak de Wet vi mette per la prima volta piede per chiedere la mano di Milla Redelinghuys. Davanti alla casa c’è un magnifico pascolo che si estende fino alla riva del fiume, cinto da alberi selvatici che si spingono fino al limite dell’acqua. Tuttavia, in quella striscia di terra del Sudafrica, le fattorie gioiello dei boeri sono ben altre. Tutte le speranze e i sogni di gloria della giovane Milla sono perciò riposti in Jak. È ricco, istruito, attraente, spiritoso, ha una spider rossa fiammante e la spavalderia di presentarsi in casa Redelinghuys con in mano un anello di brillanti incastonati in oro. Bastano pochi anni di matrimonio, però, perché Milla si renda conto che Jak non può fare di Grootmoedersdrift quello che generazioni di Redelinghuys hanno desiderato. Ha le mani morbide, è l’unico figlio di un medico, è stato educato per diventare un gentiluomo non un agricoltore. Inoltre, è un afrikaner che non sopporta gli hotnot, i «negri». E, tra «gli sguatteri negri», non tollera innanzi tutto Agaat. Agaat compare a Grootmoedersdrift che è una bambina con un braccino rachitico penzolante. Milla la educa e la istruisce con cura per farne una persona «bella e sana, piena di gratitudine », una «persona integra» che sia pronta a servirla e a «ricompensare tutte le sue lacrime e le sue pene». E Agaat la serve, per anni, con la sua cuffietta bianca inamidata e immacolata, il suo sguardo impassibile, i suoi occhi di pietra, la sua pazienza nell’accudire Jakkie, il bambino nato dal matrimonio, e nel ricamare per lui. Resta a Grootmoedersdrift anche quando tutto cambia, e la famiglia di Milla va in pezzi come uno di quei vasi coloniali che il tempo irrimediabilmente frantuma. Un giorno però Milla avverte i primi segni della terribile malattia che paralizza gradualmente ogni parte del corpo fino a togliere la parola, e il teatro dell’esistenza delle due donne assegna improvvisamente loro dei ruoli completamente diversi. Agaat rimuove porte e muri di Grootmoedersdrift e scorazza libera nell’antica dimora dei Redelinghuys, mentre Milla, priva di parola, restringe il suo dominio a una sola stanza, dove giace rinchiusa nel suo stesso corpo, come «una bambola di pezza riempita di segatura o di lupini». Non vi è alcun riferimento diretto in questo romanzo ai fatti sociali e politici che, tra gli anni Cinquanta e Novanta, hanno sconvolto e radicalmente cambiato il Sudafrica, tuttavia nel serrato confronto tra le sue due protagoniste, la padrona e la serva, la donna bianca e quella di colore unite da un legame indissolubile, La via delle donne è, come accade nella grande letteratura, una delle più potenti e illuminanti rappresentazioni della storia di questo paese. «Un grande romanzo dalla scrittura nervosa, tesa, spezzata, un'opera seria tra tanti stupidi best seller». This volume is the fourth in the series Corollaria Crustumina and deals with the results of the project The People and the State, Material culture, social structure, and political centralisation in Central Italy (800-450 BC). This project of the Groningen Institute of Archaeology, carried out between 2010 and 2015 in close collaboration with the Archaeological Service of Rome, deals with the changing socio-political situation at ancient Crustumerium resulting from Rome's rise to power. The volume brings together data from the domains of geology, geoarchaeology, urban and rural settlement archaeology, funerary archaeology, material culture studies as well as osteological and isotope analyses. On the basis of these data, a relationship is established between changes in material culture on the one hand and developments in social structure and political centralisation in Central Italy on the other in the period between 850 and 450 BC.

In her award-winning, critically acclaimed Women's Writing in Italy, 1400--1650, Virginia Cox chronicles the history of women writers in early modern Italy -- who they were, what they wrote, where they fit in society, and how their status changed during this period. In this book, Cox examines more closely one particular moment in this history, in many ways the most remarkable for the richness and range of women's literary output. A widespread critical notion sees Italian women's writing as a phenomenon specific to the peculiar literary environment of the mid-sixteenth century, and most scholars assume that a reactionary movement such as the Counter-Reformation was unlikely to spur its development. Cox argues otherwise, showing that women's writing flourished in the period following 1560, reaching beyond the customary "feminine" genres of lyric, poetry, and letters to experiment with pastoral drama, chivalric romance, tragedy, and epic. There were few widely practiced genres in this eclectic phase of Italian literature to which women did not turn their hand. Organized by genre, and including translations of all excerpts from primary texts, this comprehensive and engaging volume provides students and scholars with an invaluable resource as interest in these exceptional writers grows.
