Die Studie untersucht erstmals die großen profanen Freskenzyklen in den Villen und Palästen Roms von Clemens VIII. (1592-1605) bis Alexander VII. (1655-1667) in vergleichender Perspektive. Im Vordergrund steht die Analyse der einzelnen Bildprogramme im Hinblick auf die hierin zum Ausdruck kommenden kollektiven Muster ihrer Auftraggeber, den Kardinalnepoten. Dabei knüpft die Verfasserin an die Ergebnisse der historischen Elitenforschung Roms an. Die Untersuchung kann zeigen, dass die Fresken zu Beginn des 17. Jahrhunderts das Amt des Nepoten als rechte Hand des Papstes verklärend zum Ausdruck brachten, später dann als Medium einer politischen Apologetik der Päpste selbst genutzt wurden. Es werden darüber hinaus auch diejenigen Fresken berücksichtigt, deren Auftraggeber nicht aus dem engsten familiären Kreis der Kurie stammten. So konnten erstmals sowohl klienteläre Abhängigkeitsverhältnisse bis in die Bildprogramme hinein verfolgt als auch eigene ikonographische Muster aufsteigender Familien herausgearbeitet werden. Die Autorin schenkt dabei den visuellen Mustern besondere Aufmerksamkeit und arbeitet die Strategien und bildtheoretischen Grundlagen für die immer stärker auf Vereinnahmung des Betrachters zielenden Fresken heraus.
