Quest’opera contiene le vite degli imperatori delle dinastie Giulio-Claudia e Flavia, secondo uno schema in parte riconducibile alla biografia alessandrina (famiglia, nascita, adolescenza, inclinazioni, attività pubblica, vita privata, aspetto fisico, morte). In quest’ottica l’attenzione di Svetonio non è diretta tanto all’imperatore quanto all’uomo, di cui evidenzia debolezze e difetti, per attirare un pubblico avido di curiosità e pettegolezzi. «E quando il popolo reclamò una elargizione che gli era stata promessa, rispose di essere uomo di parola; ma quando ne reclamò una che in realtà egli non aveva promessa, rimproverò con un comunicato ufficiale quell’indegna impudenza, e dichiarò che non avrebbe dato niente, anche se aveva progettato di dare.» Svetonio Gaio Svetonio Tranquillo nacque a Roma intorno al 70 d.C. da una ricca famiglia equestre. Ricoprì importanti cariche alla corte dell’imperatore Adriano, ma cadde in disgrazia fra il 121 e il 122. Morì tra il 130 e il 140.
