The author of Jayne Eyreis brought to life by her friend and fellow novelist in “one of the most remarkable literary biographies in English prose” (The Guardian). One of the Guardian’s 100 best nonfiction books of all time First published in 1857, The Life of Charlotte Brontë presents an intimate portrait of the celebrated author through the eyes of Elizabeth Gaskell, a personal friend of Brontë’s and fellow trailblazer of Victorian-era literature. Drawing from hundreds of Brontë’s letters, Gaskell illuminates what she described as a “wild, sad life and the beautiful character that grew out of it.” Beginning with Brontë’s lonely childhood as a student at the Clergy Daughter’s School in Lancashire, Gaskell chronicles her subject’s development as a writer and first publications under the pseudonym Currer Bell, her relationship with her sisters and reluctant literary stardom, and finally her marriage at age thirty-eight and early death less than a year later.

The Life of Charlotte Brontë is the posthumous biography of Charlotte Brontë by fellow Victorian novelist, and her close friend Elizabeth Gaskell. A major source was the hundreds of letters sent by Brontë to her lifelong friend Ellen Nussey. Gaskell had to deal with some sensitive issues. She toned down some of her material concerning the Clergy Daughters' School, attended by Charlotte and her sisters, whose founder was blamed for the deaths of two Brontë sisters. Although quite frank in many places, Gaskell suppressed details of Charlotte's love for Constantin Héger, a married man, on the grounds that it would be too great an affront to contemporary morals and a possible source of distress to Charlotte's still-living friends, father Patrick Brontë and husband. Elizabeth Gaskell (1810-1865) was an English novelist and short story writer. Her novels offer a detailed portrait of the lives of many strata of Victorian society, including the very poor, and are of interest to social historians as well as lovers of literature. Some of Gaskell's best known novels are Cranford, North and South, and Wives and Daughters.

This is the first volume of Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell’s 1957 biography of Charlotte Brontë, “Charlotte Brontë - A Monograph”. The first biography of this seminal literary figure ever written, this volume provides a fantastic and unique insight into Charlotte's life and mind, making it a must-read for fans of her work and those with an interest in literary history. Emily Jane Brontë (1818 – 1848), also known under the pseudonym Ellis Bell, was an English poet and novelist best known for her only novel and classic of English literature, “Wuthering Heights”. She was the third-oldest of the four Brontë siblings who survived into adulthood. Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell, (1810 –1865) commonly known as Gaskell, was an English biographer, novelist, and writer of short stories famous for her authentic depictions of Victorian society. Other notable works by this author include: “Cranford” (1851–53), “North and South” (1854), and “Wives and Daughters” (1865). Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this classic volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition for the enjoyment of literature lovers now and for years to come.

Elizabeth Gaskell's The Life of Charlotte Brontë (1857) is a pioneering biography of one great Victorian woman novelist by another. Gaskell was a friend of Charlotte Brontë, and, having been invited to write the official life, determined both to tell the truth and to honour her friend. She contacted those who had known Charlotte and travelled extensively in England and Belgium to gather material. She wrote from a vivid accumulation of letters, interviews, and observation, establishing the details of Charlotte's life and recreating her background. Through an often difficult and demanding process, Gaskell created a vital sense of a life hidden from the world. This edition is based on the Third Edition of 1857, revised by Gaskell. It has been collated with the manuscript, and the previous two editions, as well as with Charlotte Brontë's letters, and thus offers fuller information about the process of composition than any previous edition.
