Originally planned as a brief final volume in the Collected Works, The Symbolic Life has become the most ample volume in the edition, and one of unusual interest. It contains some 160 items spanning sixty years; they include forewords, replies to questionnaires, encyclopedia articles, occasional addresses, and letters on technical subjects. Collection of this material relied on three chief circumstances. After Jung returned from active medical practice, he gave more of his time to writing, and some sixty papers as well as books were written after 1950. Second, recent research has brought to light a number of reviews, reports and articles from the early years of Jung's career. Finally, Jung's files yielded several finished or virtually finished papers that survived in manuscript. Volume 18 includes three longer works: 'The Tavistock Lectures' (1936); 'Symbols and the Interpretation of Dreams' (1961); and 'The Symbolic Life', the transcript of a seminar given in London in 1939.

Volumul de față încheie seria Operelor complete jungiene, a căror traducere a debutat, la Editura Trei, în anul 2003, cu volumul Arhetipurile și inconștientul colectiv. Partea a doua din volumul 18 cuprinde o serie de interviuri, prefețe, conferințe, articole enciclopedice, comentarii și scrisori ce aduc importante clarificări la bogata și diversa tematică abordată de Carl Gustav Jung de-a lungul unei vieți academice și profesionale îndelungate și prolifice. Titlurile succintelor texte incluse în prezentul volum vorbesc de la sine: "De nu adopt eu «adevărul catolic»?", "Contribuții la simbolistică", "Despre halucinație", "Scrisori despre sincronicitate", "Faust și alchimia", "Despre desene în diagnosticul psihiatric", "Europa spirituală și revoluția ungară" etc. Contribuțiile includ mai bine de o sută de texte scrise într-un interval de șase decenii. Ele întredeschid o ușă către fascinantul laborator de idei al psihiatrului elvețian, dar oferă și lămuriri folositoare pentru cititorii inițiați în gândirea jungiană. Cum îl evaluați, ca psihiatru, pe Hitler ca „pacient"? Hitler este în primul rând isteric, la modul general (încă din primul război mondial, 1914-1918, a fost diagnosticat oficial ca atare). În particular, el se caracterizează printr-un anumit tip de isterie: pseudologia phantastica; adică era „un mincinos patologic". Dacă acești oameni nu încep direct ca escroci, ei sunt un fel de idealiști pentru care niciun mijloc nu este prea rău, fiindcă ei cred că astfel își ating scopul visat. - C.G. Curățarea de păcate, căința și mărturisirea au constituit dintotdeauna condiții preliminare ale mântuirii. Pacienții visează la analiză ca la o baie purificatoare și revigorantă. È questo l’ultimo volume dell’edizione italiana degli scritti di Jung. Si tratta di contributi perlopiù brevi e incisivi, in parte riscoperti dopo la morte dell’autore e raggruppati per temi, i quali costituiscono – afferma Luigi Aurigemma nella Premessa – «come un rapido sorvolo della sua complessiva produzione; vario e tuttavia coerente, in quanto animato da una fondamentale unità d’ispirazione». Questi testi infatti «illustrano, affrontandola dalle più disparate angolazioni, la concezione propria a Jung della vita umana, cui è specifica la ricerca di un senso e di un fine da lui individuati nel continuo allargamento della conoscenza e coscienza di sé». Il lettore avrà modo di trovarvi l’eco degli interessi giovanili di Jung per l’occultismo e la parapsicologia, dei suoi contributi più specificamente psichiatrici e psicologici degli anni successivi e delle speculazioni filosofiche ed etico-religiose degli ultimi anni. Dall’ultimo gruppo di scritti emerge infine lo Jung pensatore e filosofo che, con l’occhio attento alle religioni del mondo, dibatte lo spinoso problema del male nella storia e propone, a chi è ormai disilluso dal crollo delle fedi e dei valori, una forma di religiosità tutta interiore, che affida all’individuazione personale il compito di tornare a realizzare sempre da capo in ognuno di noi una nuova e più matura incarnazione del divino nell’umano.
