These stories taken together are an eye on Central America, focusing on the real lives and enduring passions of today's men and women. Here are tales from the quiet villages, from the urban vortex, from the field of battle. They have a ring of truth, the sound of having been lived in the heart of the beast, giving us a fresh vision of a crucial part of the Americas. "In Central America, there's a challenge: the need to create a literary territory that, as an expression of an authentic culture, can contribute to establishing us as countries with independent identities... The most splendid contribution... will be to populate our desolate culture and reclaim our estranged national identities; to emerge as bearers of the truth, to be the gospel and the prophecy." Public Libraries In Nazi Germany written by Margaret Stieg Dalton and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992 with History categories.

Significant questions about Nazi Germany are examined from the point of view of the public library: Was national socialism an aberration from traditional German values or was it a logical development of those traditions? Did the Nazi state carry through a true revolution or did revolutionary rhetoric merely camouflage a power grab? What relationships existed between local governments and the central government? What role did the party play? The book also provides a detailed analysis of the administrative organization, policies, and programs of German public libraries between 1933 and 1945, treating the subject on its own terms. The Nazi period was dramatic and destructive, yet was a critical phase in the development of German public libraries. To serve the ends of national socialism, the new regime brought an institution adrift in a backwater into the mainstream.

We take our news for granted: that it will inform us about the significant people and cite the authoritative ones, reflect the world the way it is, and tell us why something happens as it does. Now, six working journalists, press critics, and scholars at the leading edge of media criticism have been specially commissioned to make the familiar act of reading the news into a fresh and revealing event. Taking the famous "five W's and an H" (Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How), the authors turn these questions back on journalism for the first time to show us exactly what to make of the press. Leon V. Sigal Who? Sources Make the News Carlin Romano What? Grisly Truth about Bare Facts Michael Schudson When? Deadlines, Datelines, and History Where? Cartography, Community, and the Cold War James W. Carey Why And How? The Dark Continent of American Journalism Robert Karl Manoff Writing the News (By Telling the "Story") For everyone who reads the newspaper, for the journalist, and for the media critic alike, these essays offer fresh, provocative insights into a centerpiece of American culture, the news.

Theories And Narratives written by Alex Callinicos and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995 with History categories.

Pursuing this objective, Alex Callinicos critically confronts a number of leading attempts to reconceptualize the meaning of history, including Francis Fukuyama's rehabilitation of Hegel's philosophy of history and the postmodernist efforts of Hayden White and others to deny the existence of a past independent of our representations of it. In these cases philosophical arguments are pursued in tandem with discussions of historical interpretations of, respectively, Stalinism and the Holocaust.

The Social Dynamics Of Open Data written by van Schalkwyk, Francois and has been published by African Minds this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-12-16 with Business & Economics categories.

The Social Dynamics of Open Data is a collection of peer reviewed papers presented at the 2nd Open Data Research Symposium (ODRS) held in Madrid, Spain, on 5 October 2016. Research is critical to developing a more rigorous and fine-combed analysis not only of why open data is valuable, but how it is valuable and under what specific conditions. The objective of the Open Data Research Symposium and the subsequent collection of chapters published here is to build such a stronger evidence base. This base is essential to understanding what open data’s impacts have been to date, and how positive impacts can be enabled and amplified. Consequently, common to the majority of chapters in this collection is the attempt by the authors to draw on existing scientific theories, and to apply them to open data to better explain the socially embedded dynamics that account for open data’s successes and failures in contributing to a more equitable and just society.
