This book investigates the millennial history of the Indian subcontinent. Through the various methods adopted, the objects and moments examined, it questions various linguistic, literary and artistic appropriations of the past, to address the conflicting comprehensions of the present and also the figuring/imagining of a possible future. The volume engages with this general cultural condition, in relation both to the subcontinent’s current “synchronic” reality and to certain aspects of the culture’s underlying diachronic determinations. It also reveals how the multiple heritages are negotiated through the subcontinent’s long-term sedimentational history. It scrutinizes both conservative interpretations of heritage and a possibly incremental enrichment, and the additional possibility of a mode of appropriation open to a dialectic of creative destruction, in which the patrimonial imperative is challenged, leaving room for processes of renewal and rejuvenation. The collection is organized around four major topics: Orientalism, addressed by way of the Tamil Epic Manimekalai, through the evocation of the Hastings Circle and views on a possible Hindu-Muslim unity sketched out by Sayyid Ahmed Khan; modernism in Indian and Burmese texts written in English; pictorial art, through a consideration of the work of British Asian and Indian film directors; and, finally, the current state of a body of critical thinking on gender.

Depuis l'Indépendance de l'Inde (1947), les romanciers indiens de langue anglaise brossent une fresque littéraire qui suit l'évolution de la réalité et de l'imaginaire du sous-continent. L'œuvre de Rushdie - et, en particulier ses brillants Enfants de Minuit - reste le modèle de cette importante production dans la mesure où l'écrivain exilé a réussi à transformer son pays natal en une fabuleuse " patrie imaginaire " et à utiliser sans complexe l'anglais qui n'est, pour lui, qu'" une voix de l'Inde ". Bien d'autres romanciers ont également choisi de s'expatrier, de façon temporaire ou définitive. Depuis Toronto ou Oxford, ces " enfants de Rushdie " traquent une indignité qui les hante en utilisant tous les moyens d'expression classiques du roman moderne (réalisme social chez Rohinton Mistry ou verve satirique chez Upamanyu Chatterjee), mais aussi les innovations du discours post-moderne (recours au fantasmagorique chez Vikram Chanda, perversion de l'histoire événementielle chez Shashi Tharoor et destruction du temps et de l'espace chez Amitav Ghosh)... Certains écrivains privilégient, par contre, une approche moins spectaculaire de la sensibilité indienne. Dans le sillage de l'œuvre de R.K. Narayan (qui brocardait malicieusement une " petite Inde " modeste), de nombreux romanciers (comme Amit Chauduri ou Anita Desai) travaillent, avec finesse, sur des situations modernes de grande intensité psychologique. Les romancières ont très vite pris la parole en proposant, d'abord, des récits d'émancipation précautionneuse, puis, peu à peu, des textes de plus en plus courageux qui restent cependant marqués par un contexte psychologique et social encore inhibant. Le récent Dieu des petits riens d'Arundhati Roy propose, par exemple, un monde au féminin où la dépendance débouche sur la transgression, en une dialectique à la fois poétique et tragique. L'histoire littéraire du roman indien de langue anglaise - que cet essai critique tente de retracer en présentant les œuvres d'une soixantaine d'auteurs - s'inscrit dans le vaste mouvement actuel de la littérature mondiale post-coloniale anglo-saxonne. Il y apparaît comme un modèle incontesté qui a réussi à s'imposer en intégrant les multiples différences de l'Inde plurielle.
