Este nuevo conjunto de estudios publicado en la serie ôLeer y entender la poesíaö se centra en la figura y la obra de Antonio Gamoneda, nombre imprescindible de la literatura española contemporánea. Son el fruto de la participación en el Curso de Verano 2008 de la Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha de los principales especialistas en la obra de Antonio Gamoneda y en poesía española actual. Las palabras gastadas. Poesía y poetas del medio siglo es un estudio amplio sobre el desarrollo de la poesía española a la altura de los años cincuenta del siglo XX, que plantea no sólo una visión panorámica de las principales corrientes poéticas que se desarrollan a partir del medio siglo, sino también el estudio de la obra de varias de las principales figuras que se dan a conocer en esos años. Así, en Las palabras gastadas, cuyo título remite a un conocido verso de Jaime Gil de Biedma, se lleva a cabo un análisis exhaustivo de la evolución estética de la promoción del 50, atendiendo a las diversas corrientes que la formalizan, y a los aspectos histórico-críticos, sociales y poéticos, para dar una visión global del desarrollo de ese grupo, sin evitar entrar en aspectos polémicos de su definición: desde el propio marbete generacional, hasta los rasgos de su evolución poética (la poesía social, la poesía de la experiencia, la polémica de la poesía como comunicación y como conocimiento, etc.). Por otro lado, el estudio atiende, desde diversas perspectivas, la obra de algunos de los más destacados autores de este período, así como distintos aspectos de su desarrollo poético: Jaime Gil de Biedma, Ángel González, José Manuel Caballero Bonald, Claudio Rodríguez, Antonio Gamoneda y la revista Laye. En el estudio de estos autores se incide tanto en el análisis particular de algunos textos poéticos, o de algunos de sus principales libros, como en la interpretación global de su obra.
