L'esperienza proposta nasce dall'intenzione di portare un contributo di riflessione su un tema particolarmente significativo per il paesaggio contemporaneo, tanto a livello locale quanto a livello europeo: il fenomeno della dispersione urbana. Quartu Sant'Elena, importante centro dell'area metropolitana cagliaritana con un paesaggio estremamente ricco per natura e storia, vive tutte le problematiche e le contraddizioni legate ad un intenso processo di crescita urbana in territorio agricolo e costiero e si offre così come luogo paradigmatico per una interessante e stimolante sperimentazione progettuale. This book is the result of the "SprawlScapes 09" international design workshop organized jointly by the Cagliari Architecture School, coordinated by Cesarina Siddi and the Versailles Marseille National Landscape School, coordinated by Karin Helms. At a time when landscape is becoming one of the primary resources with which to reinforce regional identity as the highest expression of cultural, natural and industrial heritage, it is important to explore ways of transforming this new awareness and sensibility into a concrete opportunity for regional development. This experience grew from the desire to contribute to the thinking about an important theme in the contemporary landscape both on the local, and European, levels - urban sprawl. Quartu Sant'Elena, an important center in the Cagliari metropolitan area with a landscape rich in history and nature, is facing all the problems and contradictions of urban growth in an agricultural and coastal context: It is a paradigmatic place for a challenging and stimulating design experiment. Cesarina Siddi (Cagliari, 1966) Docente di Architettura degli Spazi Aperti della Facoltà di Architettura di Cagliari, ricercatore in Composizione Architettonica e Urbana e specialista in Architettura del paesaggio e progettazione dei giardini, dal 1995 svolge attività di professionale e di ricerca sulle tematiche del paesaggio e sul disegno dello spazio pubblico. è autrice di numerose pubblicazioni e iniziative di sensibilizzazione e promozione della cultura del paesaggio contemporaneo. Professor of Open Space Architecture at Faculty of Architecture of Cagliari Researcher in Architectural and Urban Composition with advanced specialization in Landscape Architecture. Her professional and research experience ranges from large scale Urban Planning to Landscape Architecture, especially focusing on design of public space. She is the author of numerous publications and initiatives for promotion of contemporary landscape culture.

All’indomani del terremoto distruttivo dell’autunno-inverno 2016-17, il Comune di Arquata del Tronto è stato uno dei primi del Cratere Sismico, e certamente il più propositivo, nell’aprire un’interlocuzione con le università viste come l’istituzione più idonea ad offrire un contributo di conoscenze e di competenza per indirizzare il processo di ricostruzione. In questo contesto, il Dipartimento di Architettura dell’Università Roma Tre ha svolto studi e ricerche propedeutici ai piani di ricostruzione dei centri storici del comune, realizzando la ricostruzione virtuale di Arquata prima del terremoto ed un manuale del recupero dell’edilizia storica danneggiata ma non distrutta. Parallelamente alle attività di ricerca sono state compiute molte attività didattiche sul campo sia come tesi di laurea magistrale che di master e di dottorato, favorendo esperienze di integrazione tra didattica e ricerca, e fornendo, crediamo, un contributo significativo alla Terza Missione dell’Università.

In che termini l’architettura interpreta l’esigenza comunitaria nell’era della globalizzazione e della conseguente evoluzione dei fenomeni urbani anche alla luce di una crescita esponenziale dell’espressione comunitaria virtuale? Partendo da questo primo interrogativo critico il Festival raccoglie una serie di materiali e testimonianze che dimostrano anche il superamento dell’identificazione esclusiva del tema con le grandi tipologie collettive pubbliche, architettoniche e urbane, dell’esperienza storica. Tuttavia, pur attraverso il rilievo di fenomeni insediativi non caratterizzati, articolazioni tematiche differenziate e contributi apparentemente riferibili alla soggettività dell’autore quanto del fruitore, sembra confermarsi come il dato comunitario possa ancora “essere individuato e declinato in diverse forme, attraverso diversi ambiti, a dimostrazione della sua ineludibilità”. In what terms is architecture interpreting community need in the era of globalisation with the ensuing evolution in urban phenomena, in view also of an exponential growth in virtual community expression? Beginning from this first critical enquiry, the Festival has gathered together an array of information and evidence which demonstrate also the surmounting of this theme as being solely identified with the grand collective typologies – be they public, architectonic or urban – of historical experience. Nonetheless, albeit through the remarking of non-characterised settlement phenomena, differentiated thematic divisions, and contributions seemingly referable as much to the subjectivity of their creator as of the beneficiary, there would appear to be corroboration of just how the community datum can still “be identified and declined in various forms, across various spheres, in demonstration of its ineluctability”.
