The Northspan Uranium Mines, Ltd. started producing a uranium concentrate in December of 1957. The laboratory and pilot plant evaluation of Northspan uranium concentrate is presented in this report. Chemical analyses of this concentrate reveal that it meets all existing FMPC impurity tolerance limits, except that for thorium. The thorium tolerance limit can be met by the addition of phosphate, as is required for thorium-containing uranium concentrates. Digestion and extraction tests indicate that this concentrate should present no problems in the FMPC refinery process if standard operating conditions are used.

The Vitro Uranium Company, in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania and in Salt Lake City, Utah, started producing uranium concentrate in 1957. The laboratory and pilot plant evaluations of these concentrates are presented in this report. These concentrates meet all FMPC impurity tolerance limits. Laboratory digestion tests have revealed that both concentrates contain excessive quanitites of nitric acid-insoluble uranium at normal digestion conditions. The insoluble uranium content of these concentrates can be reduced by a "hot-concentrated" digestion procedure. A pilot plant pulse column test indicated that these materials can be processed in normal National Lead Company of Ohio refinery feed blends when this "hot-concetrated" digestion procedure is utilized.

The Lisbon Uranium Company of Salt Lake City, Utah produced a high grade uranium ore in April, 1958. The laboratory evaluation of Lisbon ore is presented in this report. This material will require blending with a high quality uranium concentrate such as South African because of its high nitric acid insoluble content and its low uranium assay. The material, when blended, meets all FMPC impurity tolerance limits except the limit for (Ca x SO4−2). It is believed that this high impurity level will not hamper refinery operation, provided that the material is processed for only a short term. Laboratory digestion and extraction tests indicate that the blend should present no serious problems in pulse column operation, provided that the as-received Lisbon ore is milled.
