'Living on the Edge' examines the function of the Sahel region of Africa as an important wintering area for long-distance migrant birds. It describes the challenges the birds have to cope with – climate change, of course, and rapid man-made habitat changes related to deforestation, irrigation and reclamation of wetlands. La grande trilogie de Michelet (L'Insecte, La Mer, L'Oiseau) est une épopée : celle de l'homme du XIXe siècle, confiant dans lui-même, qui s'ouvre à la merveille qu'est le monde et apprend à le respecter. Darwin, Fabre et d'autres nous font ainsi voyager dans l'immédiatement proche, en convoquant tout notre imaginaire intérieur. Michelet se régale et on le sent. Il est le premier à s'embarquer dans ce voyage-là. Il est historien, habitué à dépouiller les vieux livres. Leur siècle déborde de récits de voyages et d'explorations. Il y puise. Il nous embarque vers les pôles, dans les mangroves. Il s'émerveille d'un colibri. C'est un raconteur, un raconteur et un rêveur. Comme pour le récit de la tempête à Cordouan dans "La Mer", il part de sa table d'écriture elle-même : cette année 1866, il écrit le terrible livre du coeur sanglant de la Révolution française, "Quatre-vingt-treize". Pour cela, lui et sa compagne se sont réfugiés à la campagne, pas très loin de Nantes, sur les bords de l'Erdre... Les oiseaux sont sa compagnie immédiate. Alors on se laisse faire comme par un grand poème. La nature avant ces gens-là est effrayante, ou utilitaire, ou la cible de la chasse (on n'en a pas fini avec les zigouilleurs d'oiseaux, mais Michelet est le premier à tenter de leur porter un coup). Après Michelet, ce n'est pas qu'on serait devenu savant sur la chouette, l'aigle et le vautour, la frégate, le pic ou l'hirondelle – c'est juste que chacun des oiseaux, même le timide rossignol chanteur, nous a appris quelque chose de notre humanité. C'est nous, que nous apprenons à lire. Pas un hasard qu'il cite, à côté de poètes comme Ruckert, le beau texte satirique d'Aristophane, ses "Oiseaux" bâtissant une cité aérienne... FB
