Lamartine, grande figure politique : l'affirmation peut surprendre concernant l'auteur du « Lac ». De son action publique, l'imagerie républicaine n'a d'ailleurs retenu que la défense du drapeau tricolore, à l'Hôtel de Ville, le 25 février 1848. Pourtant, c'est bien Lamartine qui a pris, avec éclat, la tête d'une de nos révolutions, pour conduire une œuvre réformatrice essentielle. C'est de lui encore que se sont réclamés certains dirigeants de la France, dont François Mitterrand. Premier romantique, avant Hugo, Nerval ou Musset, il n'est donc pas que le poète un peu éthéré des « Méditations ». Il faut aussi le considérer comme un maître de la prose, un historien et un orateur ; il suffit de relire son « Histoire des Girondins » pour s'en convaincre. Tout en accordant, à l'œuvre poétique, la place qui lui revient, Gérard Unger retrace le destin de Lamartine, sous l'angle trop négligé de la politique. Avec clarté et précision, il met en lumière l'itinéraire intellectuel de l'aristocrate converti aux idéaux de 1789. Il montre comment il a été un des pères de la démocratie française, et analyse - à partir de textes en général oubliés - ses idées novatrices, ses projets de conciliateur et de rassembleur. Même si l'Histoire ne lui a donné que brièvement le pouvoir, la pensée et l'action politique de Lamartine annoncent, souvent de manière visionnaire, les combats toujours actuels pour la justice sociale, contre les ennemis des libertés publiques. Une figure majeure du XIXe siècle retrouve ici sa grandeur et son rayonnement. À travers son parcours, on mesure la cohérence de la période complexe menant de la révolution de 1789, à celle de 1848, et jusqu'à aujourd'hui.
