Nel 1527 la risonanza europea del sacco di Roma ad opera delle milizie imperiali fu enorme. L'impatto mediatico (come si direbbe oggi) assunse le forme più disparate e percorse i canali più diversi. In questo volume si raccolgono i testi diffusi in stampe di poche carte che adottano il modello tradizionale del lamento in versi (erede del planctus religioso medievale) e che talvolta svolgono la funzione di una rudimentale cronaca in rima. Si vendevano a un costo bassissimo (un "bezzo", un "quattrino") ed erano destinate a un consumo essenzialmente popolare. In appendice due canzoni deploratorie di Pietro Aretino e di Girolamo Pandolfi da Casio.

Le due frottole di Pietro Aretino sono separate da poche settimane di differenza. Ma in mezzo scorre il fiume infernale del sacco di Roma. La prima, il Coriero mandato da Venere a cercare l'Amore, fu scritta a Mantova nel marzo del 1527 ed ? una farsa, ovvero un componimento teatrale per voce sola destinato ad allietare una festa di corte (anche se poi si trasforma in uno sboccato pamphlet satirico). La seconda, la Frottola di maestro Pasquino, spedita al marchese di Mantova nel luglio di quello stesso anno, quando ormai l'Aretino si era rifugiato a Venezia, ? la sua pi? grandiosa e diabolica pasquinata, quella che fece piangere di rabbia papa Clemente VII quando la lesse, prigioniero dei suoi nemici in Castel Sant'Angelo. Nei suoi versi il sacco di Roma si converte in un macabro e grottesco carnevale che non trova confronti nella letteratura di tutti i tempi.

Giulio Rospigliosi (1600-1669), eletto papa nel 1667 con il nome di Clemente IX, fu per un trentennio il protagonista del teatro musicale romano. La "Genoinda" fu rappresentata per la prima volta nel 1641 a Roma nel Palazzo della Cancelleria. Genoinda è il nome che Rospigliosi dà a Genoveffa di Brabante, moglie del conte palatino Sigfrido di Treviri: un personaggio di cui non esiste nessun riscontro storico; tuttavia fu venerata come santa nella regione del Palatinato, anche se non è mai stata consacrata dalla chiesa cattolica. Su di lei furono scritte varie leggende agiografiche. Rospigliosi ne fa non una santa, ma una moglie esemplare, vittima prima di una congiura di palazzo e poi protagonista di una avventurosa vicenda che la reintegra nell'amore del marito e sul trono che le compete.
