Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Geology, Mineralogy, Soil Science, grade: 1,0, University of Canterbury (Department of Geology), course: Paleoecology and Paleolimnology, language: English, abstract: Zolitschka (1998) defined varves as laminated sediments occurring in stationary water bodies. Their striking feature is a seasonal, rhythmical build-up of thin, horizontal layers with a changing composition. Since the early 20th century, this type of sediment has been used for establishing exact geochronologies. In the course of the climate change debate, and the subsequent demand for high-resolution paleoclimatic data, they have come back into the focus of earth scientists. A crucial advantage of varved sediments is that they provide two different kinds of information on a sediment profile: an absolute chronology and high-resolution paleoclimatic information. Combining these two attributes offers an absolute dated time series of paleoclimatic proxy-data. Furthermore, additional analyses of the same profile can be dated. Varved sediments can be found in recent lakes as well as in paleolakes. However, their occurrence is limited to only a few sites as a consequence of the special circumstances necessary for their generation. Varved sediments in recent lakes are especially found in lakes, which are small and deep. These preconditions are often met by maars, where a lot of investigations are done (Brauer et al. 1999a, 1999b; Litt et al. 2001). Additionally, varved sediments are even found in ancient proglacial lakes (Moscariello et al. 2000) to give an example.

The magnitude and causes of decadal to century-scale changes in climate are major issues of global concern. The separation of anthropogenically driven change from natural 'baseline' variability within the atmosphere/ocean system is a prerequisite to identifying human impact on global climate. An understanding of past climate variability is therefore a key to predicting future climate change. The sedimentary record of the oceans, seas and lakes is produced by a series of depositional events that occur on seasonal timescales but can rarely be resolved due to mixing of the sediment by bottomdwelling organisms. Where they are preserved, laminated sediments act like tree rings to record these seasonal-scale processes, such as plankton blooms and floods, and provide a uniquely high-resolution record of environmental change. In addition, annually laminated or 'varved' sediment sequences act as geochronometers against which other timescales can be tested. Laminated sediments may therefore be used to develop records of interannual and decadal-scale variability which serve to test models of climate change. The authors cover a range of topics that include strategies for study and techniques of analysis. A series of case studies, dealing with a variety of lacustrine and marine records, illustrates the wide potential of laminated sediments as palaeoclimatic and palaeoceanographic indicators.

The collection of papers presented in this book illustrates the recent progress made in varved sediment research and highlights the large variety of methodological approaches and research directions applied. The contributions cover monitoring of modern sediment fluxes using sediment traps; geochronological and sedimentological analyses of annually laminated lacustrine sediments or varves; and multiproxy investigations, including geochemical and biological proxies as well as spatiotemporal analyses based on multicore studies supported by satellite images and X-ray computed tomography (CT). The scientific issues discuss the influences of hydrological and climatological phenomena on short-term changes in sediment flux, the relationships between biogeochemical (limnological) processes in the water column and the formation of varves, the preservation of environmental signals in varved sediments, and possibilities of synchronizing varved records with other high-resolution environmental archives such as tree rings.

Investigating Laminated Sediments Of The Al Azraq Basin Jordan And The Implications For Paleoenvironmental Variability written by Jessica J. Hirsch and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021 with Azraq Basin (Jordan) categories.

This research examines cored sediments recovered from the Al-Azraq basin, Jordan for laminated sediments. Laminated sediments have long been recognized from the Dead Sea basin, and determined to be varved deposits, or seasonal couplets forming annual deposits. A current debate in the literature refutes the varve designation of Dead Sea sediments (Lopez et al. 2016; Ben Dor et al., 2019; Bookman, 2020; Ben Dor et al., 2020). This study focuses on the Al-Azraq sediments in a micro-scale analysis within the context of this current debate, shedding light on the potential for laminated sediments beyond the Dead Sea basin, and the implications for climate variability. The sediments analyzed from the Al-Azraq basin are in close proximity to the Dead Sea, but separated by the Jordan Plateau into an eastern drainage. It is a low lying, endorheic basin draining an area of approximately 12,700 km2 of the interior desert extending from Syria to Saudi Arabia. The basin formed by the Hamza Graben is a rare deep sediment archive. Multiple environmental proxies including: lithology, smear slides, x-ray fluorescence (XRF), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) ,and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) investigate the potential for laminated sediments and characterize the paleolake environments. Lithology and smear slides identified the presence of fine laminated sediments and diatoms. Detailed examination of ten sediment sections totaling 5.76 meters identified three sediment sections 2.02 m in length for further analyses. From these sections subsamples with high probability of laminated sediments were sent for XRF examination. XRF results of micro-scale analysis demonstrate changes in depositional processes, alternating fine laminae of terrestrial material and Ca evaporite, possibly aragonite, and accompanying changes in moisture flux. The data demonstrate visible laminated rhythmites. XRF results identify alternating laminae of Ca and Si, SEM scans identify seasonal diatoms and EDS demonstrates an encrusting evaporite matrix. Results reveal variability in paleoenvironment with differing sedimentation above and below rhythmite sediments.

This monograph presents a proposal for interdisciplinary and international research that uses varve as an essential tool. The discovery and subsequent palaeoenvironmental studies of the annually laminated sediments of Lake Suigetsu (Japan) revealed the directionality of a new discipline in the traditional field of historical science. The historical evidence of environmental changes and natural disasters provided by annually laminated sediments promote an integration of human and natural histories on a common time scale. To explore the impact of climatic changes and natural disasters on civilized society in the present and past, we simply open this door and enter a new phase in world history. The high resolution data about environmental history like climate, sea level, vegetation changes and natural disasters under the most reliable varve chronology will be discussed in relation to the development of human history and the rise and fall of civilizations. The book shows the direction of a new world history and new cosmology of the future civilization in relation to the environmental changes.
