In the mid-1800s, thousands of Jewish immigrants arrived in the United States. A handful of these Jewish immigrants turned pioneers made their way to New Mexico. The questions arose as to why these Jewish pioneers ventured into New Mexico and why were they successful in their business endeavors. The answers presented themselves in a study of the family records of three different pioneer Jewish family units-the Spiegelbergs, the Ilfelds and Norhaus families, and the Freudenthal, Lesinsky, and Solomon families. Each family was not only successful in business, but were also prominent members of their communities. As such, they left behind detailed records of their business dealings and fascinating letters and autobiographies of their time in New Mexico. After studying these personal collections along with historical works on Jews in New Mexico and the United states, the answer to these questions of why New Mexico and why were they successful is evident. The Jewish pioneers who came to New Mexico arrived at time when businessmen were needed. The Santa Fe Trail opened a new market of trade between the United States and Mexico. These Jewish pioneers arrived in New Mexico because of the economic opportunities available to them as businessmen. They were able to quickly and easily learn the language and adapt to the New Mexican culture. The Jewish pioneer was also resourceful in business, and his adventurous business spirit helped him succeed in this economic environment. While some of the pioneers used New Mexico for business purposes and then left the state, others stayed and helped develop New Mexico's economic infrastructure. The Jewish pioneer was successful in New Mexico because of his ability to adapt to his new surroundings, his resourcefulness in business, and his desire to make a name and a fortune for himself.

The storybook history of the American West is a male-dominated narrative of drifters, dreamers, hucksters, and heroes—a tale that relegates women, assuming they appear at all, to the distant background. Home Lands: How Women Made the West upends this view to remember the West as a place of homes and habitations brought into being by the women who lived there. Virginia Scharff and Carolyn Brucken consider history’s long span as they explore the ways in which women encountered and transformed three different archetypal Western landscapes: the Rio Arriba of northern New Mexico, the Front Range of Colorado, and the Puget Sound waterscape. This beautiful book, companion volume to the Autry National Center’s pathbreaking exhibit, is a brilliant aggregate of women’s history, the history of the American West, and studies in material culture. While linking each of these places’ peoples to one another over hundreds, even thousands, of years, Home Lands vividly reimagines the West as a setting in which home has been created out of differing notions of dwelling and family and differing concepts of property, community, and history. In the small town of Atlas, Alabama, four people collide emotionally and physically; one dies a sudden and brutal death. Michelle has been living in her own hell because she believed too easily, too quickly, in the words of the man of her dreams, Johnny Blauser. Her first year of college life led her into love and, carelessly, pregnancy, only to be abandoned by a man she had believed loved her like she loved him. Too steeped in religion to consider abortion, her solution was adoption, and to fool her mother with an elaborate lie about where she was and what she was doing while she waited for her baby to be born. With the best intentions, she delivered her baby into the hands of an evil father who eventually smothered the infant. She took an apartment in the same complex as the couple that had adopted her child, to somehow watch over her baby, whom she could not, after all, save.
