Der Landkreis Bamberg ist ein vielfältiger und attraktiver Teil Oberfrankens. Er liegt im Westen des Regierungsbezirks und grenzt an die Bezirke Unter- und Mittelfranken. Die kreisfreie Stadt Bamberg, die zum UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe gehört, ist ganz vom Landkreis umgeben. Der Landkreis hat eine Fläche von 1.167,78 km² und eine Einwohnerzahl von 147.697 (Stand 31. Dezember 2021) . Der Landkreis Bamberg zeichnet sich durch seine landschaftliche Schönheit und seine kulturelle Vielfalt aus. Er umfasst drei Naturparks: den Steigerwald im Westen, die Fränkische Schweiz im Osten und die Haßberge im Norden. Durch den Landkreis fließt die Regnitz, die nördlich von Bamberg in den Main mündet. Der höchste Berg im Landkreis ist der Geisberg mit 585 m ü. NHN, der zum Nordwestteil des Naturparks Fränkische Schweiz gehört . Der Landkreis Bamberg hat eine lange und bewegte Geschichte, die eng mit dem Hochstift Bamberg verbunden ist. Das kirchliche Territorium bestand von 1007 bis 1802 und prägte das Gebiet kulturell und politisch. Nach der Säkularisation wurde das Gebiet bayerisch und in verschiedene Landgerichte eingeteilt. Im Zuge der Gebietsreform in Bayern 1972 entstand der heutige Landkreis Bamberg aus dem Zusammenschluss der ehemaligen Landkreise Bamberg, Ebern und Teilen der Landkreise Staffelstein, Höchstadt an der Aisch und Erlangen . Der Landkreis Bamberg ist ein moderner und wirtschaftsstarker Standort mit einer guten Infrastruktur. Er verfügt über ein dichtes Straßen- und Schienennetz sowie einen Hafen an der Regnitz. Er ist Mitglied der Metropolregion Nürnberg und der Planungsregion Oberfranken-West. Der Landkreis ist bekannt für sein Brauwesen, das auf eine lange Tradition zurückgeht. Er hat die höchste Brauereidichte der Welt mit über 70 Brauereien . Der Landkreis Bamberg besteht aus 36 Gemeinden, die sich in Städte, Märkte und Gemeinden unterteilen. Die größte Stadt im Landkreis ist Hallstadt mit 8.788 Einwohnern (Stand 31. Dezember 2021), die kleinste Gemeinde ist Reckendorf mit 1.068 Einwohnern (Stand 31. Dezember 2021) . Der Landkreis bietet seinen Bewohnern und Besuchern zahlreiche Sehenswürdigkeiten, wie Schlösser, Kirchen, Museen, Osterbrunnen und Naturdenkmäler . Although the study of Jewish identity has generated a growing body of work, the topic of sport has received scant attention in Jewish historiography. Emancipation through Muscles redresses this balance by analyzing the pertinence of sports to such issues as race, ethnicity, and gender in Jewish history and by examining the role of modern sport within European Jewry. The accomplishments of Jews in the intellectual arena and their notable presence among Nobel Prize recipients have often overshadowed their achievements in sports. The pursuit of sports among Jews in Europe was never a marginal phenomenon, however. In the first third of the twentieth century numerous Jewish sport organizations were founded throughout Europe, and prowess in the realm called muscle Jewry by the Zionists was a symbol of widespread pride among European Jews. Some Jewish teams were remarkably successful: the legendary Austrian soccer champion Hakoah Vienna was arguably the most visible Jewish presence in interwar Vienna, and many readers will be surprised to learn that outstanding soccer teams such as Ajax Amsterdam and Tottenham Hotspur are still considered Jewish teams. The contributors to this volume, an international group of scholars from a variety of fields, explore the diverse relationships between Jews and modern sports in Europe.
