Cultivating A Landscape Of Peace written by Matthew Dennis and has been published by Cornell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-10-18 with History categories.

This book examines the peculiar new worlds of the Five Nations of the Iroquois, the Dutch, and the French, who shared cultural frontiers in seventeenth-century America. Viewing early America from the different perspectives of the diverse peoples who coexisted uneasily during the colonial encounter between Europeans and Indians, he explains a long-standing paradox: the apparent belligerence of the Five Nations, a people who saw themselves as promoters of universal peace. In a radically new interpretation of the Iroquois, Dennis argues that the Five Nations sought to incorporate their new European neighbors as kinspeople into their Longhouse, the physical symbolic embodiment of Iroquois domesticity and peace. He offers a close, original reading of the fundamental political myth of the Five Nations, the Deganawidah Epic, and situates it historically and ideologically in Iroquois life. Detailing the particular nature of Iroquois peace, he describes the Five Nations' diligent efforts to establish peace on their own terms and the frustrations and hostilities that stemmed from the fundamental contrast between Iroquois and European goals, expectations, and perceptions of human relationships.

Landscape Of Peace written by Kerstin J. S. Werle and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-05-12 with Social Science categories.

Kerstin Werle’s work is based upon a year of fieldwork on Lamotrek and Yap, belonging to a group of islands with a matrilineal culture. Although a trend to the lifestyle of the Western world can be found everywhere on the islands, traditional customs, a gendered division of labour and subsistence techniques prevail. Kerstin Werle carried out her research according to classical anthropological methods, supplementing the available specialist literature on the widespread Micronesian atolls with a valuable overview. Her book shows how the ideal of an old and wise woman, contained in the cultural symbol lavalava, is faced with a young society. Due to the extremely limited space on the small atolls, individual plots of land have become historically, culturally and emotionally significant places, all of which have been ascribed their own individual character. With the help of these personalized places, people on Lamotrek pursue local politics.

Abstract: This thesis is my exploration of what the landscape of peace, onto which past relevant actors’ discourses and practices of peace and my interlocutors’ present practices of peace are inscribed, represents and silences, and how my interlocutors, who relate their activities to the concept peace, make sense of the concept peace. In the literature in the field of anthropology of peace, peace has been what is defined by the anthropologists, not by their interlocutors. In other words, the anthropologists’ definitions of peace have silenced their interlocutors’ understandings of peace. This whole thesis was written as a critique of how these anthropologists of peace have silenced their interlocutors’ own understandings of peace. I explored how discourses and practices that actors involved related to the concept peace in the past and my interlocutors’ present practices are inscribed onto the landscape. Hiroshima city has been explicitly designed as a “peace (memorial) city.” Reconstruction of ruined Hiroshima as a “peace (memorial) city” enabled the city government to obtain special subsidies, with which the city government constructed many facilities including the Peace Memorial Park, but at the same time, it oppressed and silenced despondent voices and uncomfortable feelings of many citizens, the majority of whom were A-bomb victims. In the Peace Memorial Park, there are many objects such as buildings, monuments, and A-bombed trees, which were erected or have been preserved by a variety of actors who thought these objects symbolize their hope for peace. Many of the objects in the park represent the master narrative of peace in Hiroshima which links the atomic bombing with the concept peace. In my fieldwork, as a guide, I took my guests to a dozen of the objects in the park in my guided tours. My guided tour, which centered on what the objects in the Peace Memorial Park represent, contributed to the hegemonic narrative of peace, which silences many voices. In a Foucauldian sense, I was formed as a subject of the hegemonic discourse of peace in Hiroshima. With this as a backdrop, I inquired how my interlocutors make sense of the concept peace especially in relation to their activities that they relate to the concept peace. Although they clearly relate their activities to the concept peace, their thoughts on peace are rarely made manifest. The foregrounded concept peace silences their understandings of peace, which differs from one another. Many of my interlocutors’ understandings of peace are counterposed to their understandings of what happened in Hiroshima.

This thesis began with a consideration of time in landscape architecture. Design practices in landscape architecture are usually open-ended in terms of time, but a prevalent new condition, the shrinking scale of social time, provides opportunities for landscape to readdress the open-ended model in design method. What would change if works of landscape architecture were conceived not for an uncertain, open-ended future, but for a defined time period (i.e., a limited duration)? Landscape architecture typically overlays two categories of time0́4social and natural. This thesis integrates social and natural time by engaging natural processes the durations or lifespans of which coincide with the abbreviated scale or frame of contemporary social time. Political relationships are considered in terms of social time and potential relations to natural process. Landscape architecture has already begun to engage that nexus through peace parks. With the new temporalities of contemporary life in mind, framing short-term natural processes through six units of social time0́4seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, and months0́4can expand opportunities and possibilities for peace parks. These new models of works are examples of peace landscape. The six pieces of peace landscape will be proposed along Israeli and Palestinian 0́−border0́+, the separation barrier. By engaging short-term natural processes with cultural significance in the region, peace landscape can provide immediate and powerful opportunities for social engagement and implement progressive transformation upon the separation system: from an implement of sovereignty and oppression to a medium of peacemaking. In truth, the individual proposals for peace landscape represented here together form one proposal: to shape the built landscape indirectly by operating directly on human consciousness.
