Landscapes Of Madeira written by Francine Silverman and has been published by Hunter Publishing, Inc this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1986-07 with Long Island (N.Y.) categories.

Even if I didn''t already live here, this guide would make me want to hit the expressway and check it out. As I''ve come to know firsthand, there are many reasons to visit this stretch of land that runs east from Brooklyn and forks at the Atlantic Ocean. Silverman lists 10 of them, but she packs so much more helpful advice and fascinating information into this well-organized and thoroughly researched guidebook that it could inspire the most sedentary suburbanite, let alone the insular Long Islander, to look beyond their own backyard at the wonders that await. (Spencer Ramsey, Newsday). Through the efforts of Francine Silverman, her meticulous research and personal observations, readers of this guide will be able to discover the reasons why Long Island continues to attract. This book will certainly broaden the horizons of its appreciative readers. (Michael Hollander, Long Island Convention & Visitors Bureau). If Long Island Alive is not the definitve guide book for Long Island travel, I don''t know what is. This was my first experience reviewing a travel guide, and it was a delightful surprise. Anything the traveler could possibly want or need to know can be found between these covers. Of particular interest to me was the Long Island history. Beginning with the ice age - which created the unique topography - to the Native Algonquian Indians, progressing through early Dutch and English settlers, the island''s history is fascinating. Ms. Silverman also describes the geology and geography and provides detailed maps. It is a diverse land of pine barrens and beaches, state parks and golf courses, hiking trails and woodlands. I was thinking Wow before I''d finished reading the introduction. The book is arranged rather handily into distinct areas of Long Island OCo this one focuses on Nassau CountyOCOs North Shore. The author then breaks down each area into points of interest and backs up her information with first hand impressions, phone numbers, websites, helpful tips and intriguing tidbits. Sources of transportation available by car, rail, bus, plane, plus directions are provided. Available lodging and restaurants in each area and price ranges are clearly listed. Whether you are interested in museums, the arts, farmer markets, romantic getaways, cruises, outdoor activities, family fun, or world class night life, that information is listed. There''s something of interest for everyone and choices to suit every pocket book. This guide also contains practical information, such as banks, hospitals, veterinary clinics, houses of worship, and which destinations are handicapped accessible. If you''re wondering if children or pets are welcome, you''ll find that information too. This guide is complete with any information the traveler could possibly want to know. And it''s entertaining reading to boot. Highest recommendation. (Midwest Book Review). You will find something enticing in every chapter of this book, whether you prefer relaxing on the beach, discovering waterfront restaurants, or experiencing world-class shopping and fine dining. Recreation, festivals & events, performing arts, shopping, best places to stay and eat OCo itOCOs all here."

For centuries the island gardens of Madeira were at the crossroads of the world: as a halfway house between the tropics and the old continent, Madeira received plants from far-flung empires and accommodated ideas from both north and south. Its streets and squares are filled with magnificent jacarandas, flame-trees, and rosewoods, while its waterways are covered by trellises of bougainvillea. This book opens with an introduction describing the discovery and development of the island and its earliest gardens, the role of Portuguese aristocrats and British wine merchants in creating the country estates known as quintas, and the extensive travel literature of early tourists. The book then delivers essential background information on how the climate and landscape of Madeira have allowed the island’s unique flora to flourish. The gardens themselves are divided according to type, public or private, historic or modern, and all 24 are in or around the capital, Funchal. A few non-garden areas have been included to introduce the wild flora and landscape of Madeira, certainly of interest to garden lovers.
