In establishing a professorship in Design & Politics at Delft University of Technology, the Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment has launched a program of education, research and practice for the spatial design of the Netherlands, aimed at reinforcing the interaction between design and politics. The purpose of this book is to offer inspiration and an organizing framework for that program, based on history, reflection, policy and, just as importantly, ambition. The book traces the history of the Netherlands' thinkers, makers and builders. Hein Otto was in 1941 de eerste academisch afgestudeerde landschapsarchitect van Nederland. Hij doceerde aan de hogescholen van Wageningen en Delft en had een actief verenigingsleven, zowel professioneel als in de muziek en de beeldende kunst. Otto was ook de eerste landschapsarchitect in dienst bij de Nederlandse Spoorwegen. Daarnaast had hij een éénmansbureau. Hij behoorde tot de kleine groep modernistische tuin- en landschapsarchitecten die een belangrijk aandeel hadden in de wederopbouw door ontwerpen voor landschapsherstel, nieuwbouwwijken, infrastructuur, recreatie- en sportparken. Otto’s oeuvre kent een grote reikwijdte, zowel geografisch als qua schaal. Zijn ontwerpen variëren van tuin tot campus en van stationsgebied tot beplanting van polderwegen en spoortrajecten. Vooral Otto’s ontwerpen voor de Nederlandse Spoorwegen tonen zijn ontwerpuitgangspunten: eenvoud en soberheid. Zijn werk voor gemeenten door het hele land wordt gekenmerkt door eenvoudige geometrische lijnen, vermengd met een meer losse landschappelijke vormgeving. Met zijn gemeentelijk advieswerk en als vaste ontwerper bij de Nederlandse Spoorwegen heeft hij tussen 1950 en 1990 een belangrijk aandeel gehad in de inrichting van het Nederlandse landschap.
