New York-based British artist John Beech and New York playwright Edward Albee have known each other since 1991, when Albee acquired the first of several of Beech's works for his collection. In the summer of 2006, Beech set out for Montauk to meet with Albee about collaborating on a book. As Albee went through the images, Beech was struck by the poignant and poetic remarks Albee spoke in response, sometimes with just a single word, at other times with a short insightful phrase. The author looks forward to a postmodern Europe in which there is a faint glean of light from the other side. What actually appeared was the glare of Nazism and Communism, each claiming the future.

The autobiography of Oskar Maria Graf, his first major work, was published in 1927.
