In this study of language socialization among the Kaluli people of Papua New Guinea, Bambi B. Schieffelin examines the everyday speech activities between children and members of their families, linking them to other social practices and symbolic forms such as exchange systems, gender roles, sibling relationships, rituals and myths. In Kaluli society, as in many others in Papua New Guinea, reciprocity plays a primary role in social life. In families, social relationships are constituted through giving and sharing food. Children, however, are also socialized through language to refuse to share, creating a tension in daily interactions. Issues of authority, autonomy and interdependence are negotiated through these verbal exchanges. Schieffelin demonstrates how language plays a fundamental role in the production, meaning and interpretation of these activities, as it is the medium of social practice. Through the micro-analysis of social interactions, Schieffelin shows how values regarding reciprocity, gender relations and language itself are indexed and socialized in everyday talk to children, and how children's own ways of speaking express fundamental cultural concerns about their social relationships.

'This is an outstanding collection of papers by top scholars in a range of disciplines who shed stimulating, complementary insights into the social, cognitive and semiotic frameworks that shape both the acquisition of language, and the constitution of social actors through that process. The intentionally loose ecological framing of the volume provides an arena within which a range of perspectives, all united by their opposition to a mechanistic view of language acquisition, can enter into dialogue with each other. This is a most stimulating collection, with a range of insightful investigations of settings as diverse as an autistic child learning to interact with others on the playing field, professional gate-keeping encounters, and foreign language classrooms.' Professor Charles Goodwin, University of California at Los Angeles The book brings together well-known scholars in two relatively distinct fields, language acquisition and language socialization, and from a variety of orientations within applied linguistics to describe language development from a relational perspective. The papers in this volume are a response to three main questions: 1) What conceptual models best capture the ecological nature of language learning? 2) What research approaches are best likely to illuminate the relationship between language and social structure? 3) How is educational success defined for language acquisition and language socialization?

Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,3, LMU Munich (LMU Muenchen), course: Proseminar, 10 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The Importance of Language: An Introduction Communication is perhaps the one thing that brings and keeps human beings together. It is through talking to each other that we are able to belong. Without language this wouldn’t be possible. The most striking example in world literature, that could prove this statement is the monster in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Because of his looks, he is completely shut out from society. Only with time does he understand that the only way for him to become part of this very same society is through language and communication, through trying to understand people and be understood. Only after gaining enough skills to articulate his thoughts and feelings in a way not to be misunderstood, is he able to take part in social life. It is then natural to assume that the ability to express ourselves, as well as the ability to comprehend what is expressed, is one of the major criteria for socializing. It allows us to belong to a community. This ability develops throughout our lives. We start from zero as infants and become more and more skilled as we grow up. This “gain[ing] of competence in sense-making”, as Elinor Ochs (1991: 44) calls it, has been a major research topic for linguists. Ochs tries to show in her article, “Misunderstanding Children”, how close this process of developing language skills, in order to understand/comprehend, is connected to the social and cultural development of individuals, because “[e]very society establishes norms of competence and all members of society, including infants and children, are evaluated in terms of them” (Ochs 1991: 44). Children become linguistically and culturally competent members of their communities through interactions with caregivers and other more competent members of their community (cf. Ochs & Schieffelin, 1984; Schieffelin & Ochs, 1986). Through this language socialization, children learn the behaviors that are culturally appropriate in their community (cf. Schieffelin & Ochs, 1986).
