La dilatation de l’espace commercial et l’essor du négoce interculturel ont conduit les marchands à mobiliser, ajuster et élargir leurs compétences, notamment celles qui concernent les langues et les langages – considérés ici dans leur acception la plus large. Ce constat a souvent été dressé par les historiens du commerce qui n’ont cependant pas poussé plus avant leurs travaux dans une direction qui les éloignait de leurs études en cours. D’août à octobre 1801, plusieurs navires en provenance d’Alexandrie vont se succéder dans les ports de Marseille et de Toulon. À bord sont rapatriés des militaires de l’armée d’Orient qui, après une occupation de l’Égypte commencée en juillet 1798, vient de subir une défaite écrasante face aux Anglais et aux Turcs. À la mi-septembre, une frégate anglaise, La Pallas, débarque au Lazaret de Marseille 310 passagers, dont 80 Français. Les autres sont des Égyptiens. Il y a des hommes, des femmes, des enfants, tous vêtus à l’orientale et parlant arabe. Parmi eux, nombre de Coptes et de Mamelouks. On extrait aussi de la cale un grand tonneau d’eau de vie où est conservé le corps d’un personnage important nommé Jacob Hanna... C’est à lui et à ceux et celles que l’on nommera bientôt « les réfugiés égyptiens » que ce livre est consacré. Il évoque à la fois leur vie à l’époque où l’Échelle du Caire, avec sa petite communauté française et son consul, faisait prospérer le commerce au profit de Marseille, puis, sous l’occupation de l’Égypte, leur collaboration avec Bonaparte et l’armée d’Orient. Après leur débarquement, il décrit comment ils se sont établis et ont vécu dans la cité phocéenne, qu’ils soient riches et prospères ou pauvres et démunis. Il s’étend enfin sur un épisode dramatique, quasi-absent aujourd’hui de la mémoire collective marseillaise, et dont ils furent les principales victimes. À Marseille, après la défaite de Bonaparte à Waterloo, qui sonna l’écroulement définitif de l’Empire, les journées des 25, 26 et 27 juin 1815 donnèrent lieu à une violente insurrection populaire qui entraîna un massacre politico-racial, dont le bilan sera évalué à 250 morts et blessés. Nombre de réfugiés égyptiens, femmes et hommes, souvent les plus noirs de peau, et demeurant dans la Ville vieille ou dans le camp du cours Gouffé, seront alors les martyrs de cette Terreur blanche et de la répression politique sous la seconde Restauration.
