Avant mon livre ? Marie-Henri d’Arbois de Jubainville est l’auteur d’un ouvrage paru en 1877 qui est pratiquement le seul à ce jour à présenter tous les peuples d’Europe de l’Antiquité dans un livre en un seul volume. Il s’intitule : « Les premiers habitants de l’Europe d’après les écrivains de l’Antiquité », Hachette Livre BNF, 2014. Plus d’un siècle après lui, à une époque où la connaissance de ces peuples et de leurs langues a considérablement évolué, je me propose à mon tour de donner une information détaillée sur toutes ces antiques nations de notre continent (y compris celles du Caucase et de l’Anatolie), les ancêtres de la majorité des Européens actuels. Mon livre présente un intérêt historique et ethno-linguistique certain. Il décrit toutes les langues connues par des écrits, qui étaient parlées en Europe dans l’Antiquité. Il offre en outre un tableau clair et précis de toutes les langues européennes actuelles qui en descendent. Il contient une chronologie complète de l’histoire de Rome et de la Grèce. Il situe l’époque de fondation de nombreuses villes et villages actuels. Il mentionne les noms des sites archéologiques importants. Concise mais complète, cette synthèse qui se réfère aux œuvres des auteurs antiques gréco-romains (surtout) et qui tient compte des inscriptions en de nombreuses langues (dont le gaulois, le celtibère, l’étrusque, le messapien, le thraco-gète, le luvien...) servira efficacement d’aide-mémoire aux profs et aux étudiants. Le livre s’adresse aussi à tous ceux qui s’intéressent aux origines et à l’Histoire de l’Europe. Pour faciliter les recherches sur un mot, il existe aussi en version numérique.
