Käsityöläisperheen poika Teuvo Pakkala kasvoi kurjissa oloissa. Viinaanmenevä isä joi perheen vararikkoon, ja Oulun köyhälistön olot tulivat perheen lapsille omakohtaisesti tutuiksi. Pakkalan omaelämäkerrallinen teos keskittyy naapuruston lapsiin, jotka kerjäävät kadulla ja tekevät töitä. Kaikki eivät kuitenkaan kärsi samoin, ja vastakkainasettelu samppanjaa siemailevien rikkaiden perheiden ja nälkää kärsivien lasten välillä onkin teoksessa avainasemassa. Kirjailija Teuvo Pakkala (1862–1925) tunnetaan erityisesti lasten elämää kuvaavista novelleista. Hänen tyylinsä luokitellaan yleensä joko realistiseksi tai naturalistiseksi. Pakkala julkaisi myös romaaneja, näytelmiä ja muistelmia. Pakkala aloitti lääketieteen, historian ja kielten opinnot Helsingin yliopistossa, mutta opinnot jäivät kesken. Hän siirtyi työskentelemään lehtimiehenä, minkä myötä kirjoittamisesta tuli hänelle yhä merkityksellisempää. Esikoisteos "Lapsuuteni muistoja" julkaistiin vuonna 1885. Myöhemmin Pakkala työskenteli myös kustannustoimittajana Otavalla.
