The Emsbury locals call them “grockles”, summertime visitors that flock to the beautiful estuary of the river Em. The most famous grockle is Meade Daguerre, controversial artist with an international reputation to uphold. Lara Bliss, local artist and president of the Emsbury League of Artists, sees Daguerre as one of her own and takes him under her wing when she hears that journalist Jack Palanga “the Celebrities’ Confidant” is in town after a story. Palanga is playing his cards close to his chest, but gradually it transpires that he suspects the crew of Daguerre’s racing yacht, which is berthed in Emsbury marina, are using it to smuggle something – possibly illegal immigrants – ashore. Daguerre is beset by another distraction: nighthawks searching for a horde of gold with metal detectors have plundered an archeological site on his estate. The archaeologists guarding the site are attacked at night in an apparent attempt to drive them off. Matters become more serious when Daguerre discovers a bloody chaos in the cabin of his racing yacht. It appears a murder has been committed there, and the five members of the crew have disappeared. As July unfolds the police, amateur sleuths – led by Lara Bliss – and journalists seek to solve the twin crimes. As Bliss navigates her own way to an understanding of who are behind them she begins to see that the clash of two communities – and two cultures – means that things are never quite what they seem. In the end it is Lara Bliss’s young niece, Cornelia, who, with her unbending sense of what is right and what is wrong, pierces the fog of celebrity and exacts her own kind of justice.

When a deceased artist, with an estate of almost incalculable worth, means heirs at war, who will heal the rifts? There will be advisors aplenty, but can they bring peace to the warring factions? The estate of renowned artist, Gustave Post, is in the hands of the Collarii Foundation, which administers it to protect his life’s work. The heirs are fractious and unreliable. When an important but unknown Post appears for sale, it is suspected that one is trying to sell it anonymously, in contravention of their obligations to the foundation. The foundation asks Corey Templeton, the expert in Post’s work, to undertake a clandestine investigation to identify the owner. Templeton uses his assistant, Waverley Smith, to get close to more bloody-minded heirs. Shiningly attractive, she is both a boon and a liability. Templeton soon finds himself entangled in her unscrupulous methods. As the investigation proceeds and the secrets of the past are uncovered, damaging discoveries are made about the actions of Post nearly four decades before. A tale that affirms the myth of the demonic artist genius is any biographer’s dream, not least Post’s! Can the foundation keep control of Post’s reputation, and maintain his blue-chip status? And can Templeton keep his equilibrium as, on all sides, emotions run high?

One year into the task of putting University London Central back on its feet, trouble-shooting Vice-Chancellor Professor Clifford Conquest is battling those who, ‘in dribs and drabs, defraud my students of the education they deserve’. His political star is in the ascendant and the ambition to be an important figure of the Centre Left in a reformed Labour party comes closer. But no! His aim is threatened by the forces of the Rising Left – not least on his governing body – bent on displacing the Centre Left. Both factions regard universities as their intellectual stronghold in danger of becoming a plaything of the Right. When a magnetic couple from the world of cinema attend Graduation Day, Conquest’s ambitions for The New University are given renewed impetus. Complications are rife. A student comes to a sticky end, raising questions about the university’s ability to assess risk. A literary endowment causes strife. The value of arcane research fields is called into question and professors revolt. Can Conquest fight off the doctrinaire forces of the Rising Left determined to derail his ambitions? Like any Public Sector samurai, he dons a fresh suit and takes the fight to his enemies. Will Higher Education be reborn? Can he out-connive the connivers? Do the polemical hardliners out-fox him? Even in his darkest hour there are glimpses of stardust; ideals to guide him onwards. For one driven by the highest motives success is truly glorious, even if threatened by the occasional fumble!

The Genius Of Women written by Janice Kaplan and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-02-18 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

We tell girls that they can be anything, so why do 90 percent of Americans believe that geniuses are almost always men? New York Times bestselling journalist and creator and host of the podcast The Gratitude Diaries Janice Kaplan explores the powerful forces that have rigged the system—and celebrates the women geniuses, past and present, who have triumphed anyway. Even in this time of rethinking women’s roles, we define genius almost exclusively through male achievement. When asked to name a genius, people mention Albert Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci, and Steve Jobs. As for great women? In one survey, the only female genius anyone listed was Marie Curie. Janice Kaplan, the New York Times bestselling author of The Gratitude Diaries, set out to determine why the extraordinary work of so many women has been brushed aside. Using her unique mix of memoir, narrative, and inspiration, she makes surprising discoveries about women geniuses now and throughout history, in fields from music to robotics. Through interviews with neuroscientists, psychologists, and dozens of women geniuses at work in the world today—including Nobel Prize winner Frances Arnold and AI expert Fei-Fei Li—she proves that genius isn't just about talent. It's about having that talent recognized, nurtured, and celebrated. Across the generations, even when they face less-than-perfect circumstances, women geniuses have created brilliant and original work. In The Genius of Women, you’ll learn how they ignored obstacles and broke down seemingly unshakable barriers. The geniuses in this moving, powerful, and very entertaining book provide more than inspiration—they offer a clear blueprint to everyone who wants to find her own path and move forward with passion.
